TV Shows We Loved - Julia
December 23rd 2010 22:54
In an era where peace, love and equality of race and creed seem to infect even the small screen, shows such as Room 222 (more about that one later) and 'Julia' - found themselves at the forefront of our viewing.
Based around the story of a young African-American woman working as a nurse. She is also a widow (her husband died in Vietnam) trying to raise a young son (the ever so cute Corey Baker) alone.
Controversial because it was the subject of constant criticism that it did not realistically portray the lives of blacks in America the series was ahead of its time with the later arrival of mega hit series such as The Cosby Show.
And with (even then) touchy one liners such as:
Julia Baker: Did they tell you I'm colored?
Dr. Chegley: What color are you?
Julia Baker: Wh-hy, I'm Negro.
Dr. Chegley: Have you always been a Negro, or are you just trying to be fashionable?
. . . the program won the hearts and viewing habits of millions around the world.
Ane while Diahann Carroll may have had the lead role of Julia Baker - audiences were besotted by the two youngest members of the cast Marc Copage who played Corey Baker and Michael Link his 'white' pal Earl J. Waggedorn.
The show was nominated for no less than four Emmy's and three Golden Globe Awards, with Diahann Carroll winning Best TV Star - Female in 1970 - and justifyable rating as a 'TV Show We Loved'.
