Cartoons We Loved - Ruff n Reddy
January 31st 2011 20:06
If the following means anything to you then you're probably not blogging - you're probably deciding between stewed prunes or pureed peaches for your next meal.
Get set, get ready
Here comes Ruff and Reddy
They're tough but steady
Always rough and ready
They sometimes have their little spats
Even fight like dogs and cats
But when they need each other
That's when they're Ruff and Reddy
The Ruff & Reddy Show was Hanna-Barbera's first cartoon series which featured a cat (Ruff) and dog (Reddy) and was a trailblazer in many ways for cartoon series developed much later such as Huckleberry Hound, Magilla Gorilla, Top Cat and Yogi Bear.
Originally screened back in 1957 the show was far superior in its production techniques than its immediate predecessor (in the kids cartoon ranks) Crusader Rabbit and was even dubbed into Brazilian, Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and of all languages Macedonian!
The series ran successfully for over three years before a plethora of new animated characters and techniques found favour with TV execs and fans alike - with only the occassional re-run being shown on networks through until 1967.
For the baby boomers though, Ruff and Reddy was as iconic as any of the animated series back in the day, and deserves a place in our list of 'cartoons we loved'.
