What's Your 70s/80s fashion fiasco
June 4th 2008 00:54
Recently, I was talking with a group of friends about our fashion sense (or lack thereof) when we were in our teens.
By the way, my fashion sense has improved slightly over the years, but I still have no clue about what is ‘cool’ – or perhaps ‘cool’ has bypassed me altogether.
One female friend brought up the point of being almost a little paranoid about age-appropriate clothing, since she didn’t want to be a "mature" woman trying to re-live her high school years - but not ready to put on the granny pants either. Know what I mean?
It seems that today too many wrongs make a right. It's true. Take a look around you; notice those mullets, that fluoro-pink singlet against a dark-red shirt. Has your daughter stolen your sunnies recently - your son, your disco shirt from the '70s?
Uncool is also cool - apparently.
Outrageous has become fabulous and way out is way in.
And so – we mused about our 70’s and 80’s fashion faux pas.
Me resplendent in my home made ‘Starsky’ jacket, Lightning Bolt and Crystal Cylinders T’s - along with flared jeans and pukka shell (and or fake shark’s tooth) necklace – still ranked right up there in the “that was sooooo cool for the 70’s’ stakes.
But make no mistakes – looking back (and anyone married in the 70’s with the photographs to show for it will attest) – it was a particularly turbulent (and sometimes very ugly time).
Sure – we enjoyed the fashion (complete with Farrah Fawcett hair flicks and mid drift 80’s tops) before we realised how wrong it all really was – but what are your favourite 70s and 80s fashion faux pas?

Jennifer Beales and young teenage boys' dreams were made of those.
Now don't get me started on Olivia Newton John and the whole "Physical" thing . . .

Geez, MNG, I don't remember the 70's and 80's because I was still recovering from the 60's.

What!
GIven our penchant for following overseas fashion here Oz - I've been growing the lamb/mutton chops and bought up big on the gaucho pants . . . damn!
