Classic 70's Afternoon Sitcoms
January 9th 2009 21:26
When I was an eight-year-old - I remember the battle lines being drawn in the playground one lunchtime between fans of Hogan's Hero's, McHales Navy and the Brady Bunch.
Now we're not exactly talking star knives at 10 paces - but none-the-less - compelling arguments were constantly being 'thrown into the mix' by members of each faction - over of course, the staple of the day - a Vegemite sandwich.
Now, even as an eight-year-old - it always takes one - and that one was (let's call her Deirdre) - who for want of having anything better to do with her time would throw in a curve ball - just to watch the proverbial seagulls fight over that ever elusive chip.
"What about Nanny and the Professor or Gilligan's Island?"
"Or did anyone say The Partridge Family or I Dream of Jeannie?"
". . . yeah . . ." came the obligatory cry from those who with nothing better to contribute.
" . . . yeah, what about The Addams family then . . . huh?"
" . . . or Lost in Space . . . "
Amidst the ensuring fracas - Deirdre had of course left - having successfully instigated serious chaos in the playground universe - yet so many year's on - the legacy of her 2 minute foray into the politics of afternoon television has stayed with me.
So kids?
What's it to be - a, b, c or d - all of the above or none of the aforementioned?
Or perhaps another Deirdre is just waiting out there in the wings . . . .

That's not to say I didn't love the above mentioned shows, I was hooked on them. Although I don't think I ever saw McHale's Navy. I did have a huge crush on Wil Robinson from Lost in Space...and who could forget "Oh the pain, the pain" of Dr Smith?!

As for Lost in Space - that series had a lot to answer for and is a riot when you look back at the costumes, make-up and sets.
Oh the Pain indeed.
BTW - the older of the Robinson daughters was in Sydney last year doing a tour - how sad was that?

When it comes to Hogan's Heroes - I've found it really was a guy vs a girl thing - and that Gilligan's Island and Happy Days was more for the 'chicks' - as far as that era was concerned at least.
Cheesy?
That's what makes the Brady's such a legacy.
