80s TV We Loved - Miami Vice

March 23rd 2011 19:56
Miami, Armani, Ferrari, TV, 80s
Miami Vice.

Those two words alone immediately conjure up images of raybans, pastel suits and the distinctive, synthesized instrumental music of Jan Hammer.

Produced by Michael Mann the show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two very cool detectives working undercover in Miami.

Drawing heavily on 1980s New Wave culture and music. It is recognized as one of the most influential television series of all time. In fact People magazine stated that Miami Vice "was the first show to look really new and different since color TV was invented."

In keeping with the show's namesake, most episodes focus on combating drug trafficking and prostitution - but in reality history won't recount the storylines but the characters themselves and the fashions of the time along of course with the Ferrari Daytona and Testarossa used in filming.

The show also brought the "T-shirt under Armani jacket"-style, slip-on sockless loafers the fashion trend (which is still evident today) to wear a small amount of beard stubble for that rugged - I don't care less - but really do look!

Such was the popularity of the show many notable actors, actresses, musicians, comedians, athletes, celebrities, appeared through out the shows including Willie Nelson, Gene Simmons, Frank Zappa, Phil Collins, Frankie Valli, Little Richard, James Brown, Leonard Cohen and Eartha Kitt - why even Bruce Willis got in on the act.

Snaring Grammy's, Emmy's People Choice and Golden Globes - Miami Vice can lay claim to plaudits most producers can only dream and justifyably lay claim as a 80s TV we loved.

I think my favorite celebs would have to be Glenn Frey of the Eagles "Smuggler's Blues" (not sure which came first--song or episode) and then the one with Sheena Easton.

Somehow the later movie, didn't live up to the hype. It was a good flick but, would have been better off with a different title and less to live up to.
