Are the 90s the new 80s?

As the demographic ages, it appears that musical nostalgia is also experiencing a shift.
What Baby Boomers have long endured is now starting to reverberate among late 20-early 30-somethings as school leavers start to look back with a certain fondness on music and fashion from the 90s.
Now for some the mere thought of looking 'back on the 90s' had yet to even occur given it seems the 70s hadn't long passed us by and the 80s - well the less said about the decade that gave us Juice Newton, Devo and Wham, the better.
Mind you, whether it was the 70s, 80s or even the swining 60s - musically they could be pigeon-holed quite nicely - book ended by the fashions of the time.
But the 90s?
What on earth characterised the 90's?
Was it so-called house music? The decade was so eclectic, so diverse that I couldn't quite put my finger on what in particular made it so special - in fact compared with the three previous decades it was particular beige as far as I'm concerned.
But maybe, in an era where being an 'individual means being just another postage stamp on Facebook - perhaps the 90s does mean something.
