Where Were You When . . .?
March 25th 2008 00:47
With the greatest respect to those who lost their lives and to those valiant men and women who acted selflessly and heroically in the face of tragedy.
July 20, 1969 and Armstrong walking on the moon, Sept 11, 2001 - and the attack on the Twin Towers, 31st of August and Lady Diana's death and of course JFK's assassination back in November 1963.
Of course history will tell us that the cessation of hostilities from both the Great Wars (WWI and WWII) were also epochs in modern history - and would appreciate comment from Orblers who may have been there (no doubt as children) for the announcement that the second conflict had indeed come to an end.
But what of the the first four - 9/11, Lady Diana (and for those who can remember) - The Moon Landing and JFK's assassination - do you recall?

Lady Diana.
I was working at my part time job when we heard the news on the radio. Dodi - dead. Driver - dead. Bodyguard - serious injuries. Diana - broken arm. My boss heard that and said "she's dead too - they just don't want to announce it yet"
9/11
After having a shocking night with my 5month old baby, she was sleeping in but Mr M woke me when he heard the news on the radio.
"What the hell are you waking me for?" I said angrily.
"The twin towers have come down. 2 planes flew into them".
"Impossible" I said. "Turn the radio off and turn it back on in a couple of hours when more facts come through".
Then Mr M turned on the tv....
I have this one photo of Mr M holding our baby as she sucks on his finger. I quickly took this one photo because she looked cute at that moment. The television happen to be in the background and the text reads "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of this tragedy".
Sad sad day.....
Love & stuff

I was working on the computer - putting finishing touches to a job when I heard Sandra Sully stumbling and fumbling through ' a report just in' - it was enough to grab my attention at the time - and definitely enough to keep myself and Mrs NG up until well after 3am - we were in shock - as much for the audacity of the tragedy as for what would happen next.
As for Diana - we were with friends about to enjoy brunch with the news came through - stunned disbelief.
Can't pay testament to JFK - but can remember being plonked in front of the TV and told that this is something you need to watch (the school had been given the day off by the way) - I wanted to go outside and play footy - but glad my parents insisted I view such an historic moment.
Thanks for sharing.

another vivid memory was listening to the rapidly increasing death toll of martin bryant when he shot all those people in the port arthur massacre in tasmania, i was a teenager living in nsw at the time and i sat quietly by myself in our nannas caravan in our backyard and just happened to catch the broadcast . . . i kept expecting the number of people to stop and he would be apprehended but it just went on and on, i think he shot over 70 people (35 died) . . . i had never heard anything like it in my short lifetime

Martin bryant - this was scary - because it seemed much more real - close to home . This was one of the unbelievable but true times when we hope we are just having a dream.
Who is this man? Where is he? What made him do it?
All going through the mind at the same time.
It still dogs me.

9/11, I was on a holiday on the Gold Coast. I got up, turned on the TV, and there it was. It was such a shock.
And yeah, Ginger, Martin Bryant - there was another really shocking one. I remember I was doing the dishes when I first heard about that!
Hope you had a good Easter, MNG

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
I believe I was at home (I would've been a junior in college then, I think, so it must have been a weekend when I was home?). My mom came in and mentioned that there had been a crash, and Diana was dead. I was a bit shocked, but probably not as overwhelmed as some people. As a 20 year old guy, I didn't have a lot invested in the Diana/Charles storyline. Still, it was a tragic and avoidable occurrence.
As for 9/11, I was at work, about 3 miles away. If you're interested, I did a blog about it some time ago here. With the exception of the day I got married, I don't think there will ever be a day as indelibly etched into my memory.

Remember thinking the same thing 9/11 and vividly recall the CNN commentator at the time telling the world that all air traffic had been suspended from the area - at the exact same time one of the passenger jets flew into view of the television cameras.
My immediate reaction was 'look at the damn monitor you idiot' - the rest of course is history.
The less said about Martin Bryant the better . . .
Thanks for stopping by and sharing

Bryant should and hopefully has been locked away for eternity.
There's more than a few screws loose and more evil than I can fathom.

I guess the point being - that you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news of each.
Ask me what I was doing last Thursday 2 months ago and it would be a stretch.
Stay well and keep smilin'

Cheers buddy.
A cousin of mine was working the night shift at the Waldorf in New York and was finishing up just as events were unfolding.
He said he had no idea of what had actually happened until he heard a huge amount of commotion downstairs and people screaming.
Initiallly he thought there'd been a shooting - but of course the truth unfolded very very quickly.
Thanks for your recollections champion.
Cheers

A Word From The Wise
Celebwise
In regards to Lady Diana, I was channel surfing and the words popped out at me at the bottom of the screen, it was breaking news that there were reports that Diana had died.
I was a teenager then, I told my parents what I'd seen. They didn't believe me and said if it had happened it would be all over the news. A few minutes later (I guess once the channels had a chance to get themselves together), it was. It was such a shock, I was a huge admirer of Lady Diana. Then a friend called and he was saying 'did you hear?' and of course I knew what he was talking about. It's definitely a day I still remember.
As for 9/11, it was early in the morning and I was up finishing off an assignment, I turned on the tv for some background noise and it was just after the first building had gone down. I just saw what looked like a disaster zone and my attention stayed on that as the reports kept coming in. I couldn't believe it. It was such a sad day and one that remains with you.
With events such as these it seems that you always remember where you were and what you were doing when they happened.

My family and I watched it on telelvision in awe.
Sept 11, 2001 - and the attack on the Twin Towers,
I heard about it on the radio on my way to work. By the time I arrived at work, it was on every radio station and television station. Many of my friends lost loved ones and homes. My cousin and two godsons were both deployed to Iraq. My cousin was killed (and left 3 children and a wife), one of my godsons is disabled and returned to the states, my other godson is still overseas fighting.
Lady Diana's death-I was watching Saturday Night Live and they cut into the program to lret everyone know.
JFK's assassination back in November 1963
I was barely two so I do not remember this. I do remember when bobby Kennedy was murdered. My mom was so sad and cried.
