American Bandstand, Dick Clark, Music, Pop Music, 50s
Dick Clark’s American Bandstand began in 1957 and continued until 1989.

The program's mix of lip-synched performances and its "Rate-a-Record" segment captivated teenagers from its very first episode right through to its final ity.

Clark began his career as a radio announcer at WRUN in Utica, NY, at the age of 17 and went on to host American Bandstand. The the show became an after-school staple for a generation of teenagers and its generational significance can be evidenced through the hit musical High School Musical.

Having introduced innumerous recording artists' first TV appearances, including Buddy Holly, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 and Madonna, Clark institued The American Music Awards in 1973 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

After suffering a minor stroke in December 2004.

Clark has been married three times. His first marriage was to Barbara Mallery in 1952; the couple had one son, Richard, and divorced in 1961. He married Loretta Martin in 1962; the couple had two children, Duane and Cindy, and divorced in 1971. Since 1977, Clark has been married to Kari Wigton.

Today in spite of ill health, Clark continues to make the occassional personal appearance and remains in touch with both the record industry and those who regail in it.

DC was the man.! I don't how many shows I watched. I remember the Jackson 5 but I missed when he had Madonna. I watched a video once and she seemed WAY too out there for AB! As a Aussie, perhaps you'll appreciate my first taste of Rick Springfield was on AB back in the day with "Speak to the Sky."

AND I remember when Clark was stretch his acting chops and appeared on SOME police drama playing a bad guy. I was pretty young and forget the program. I just remember seeing him in handcuffs.
