Why It's Great to Be An Aussie

March 3rd 2011 06:19

There are certain things about being an Australian which (in our own minds at least) make living here pretty damned special.

Let's face it - the English got it wrong yet again back in the late 1700's when ship after ship of transported convicts found their way to the new prisoner dumping ground of the Pacific - a colony known as New Holland.

OK, so it was hardly pristine cottage gardens, devonshire teas and gentleman frills for our first settlers - but things have certainly looked up since then the First Fleet arrived in 1788.

You can point to the beaches, the outback the natural wonders this country has been blessed with - but it's quite often the obtuse, the quirky, the unique which makes being an Aussie great.

Let's face it - where else on the face of the planet is everyone your 'mate'.

In the main - most Aussies don't care what colour your skin is, what religion you are or where you come from - so long as you regard yourself as one of us - like footy or cricket and are a dab hand at a Barbie - you'll fit right in!

We are free to travel the world without prejudice and without getting the sense that a room of people suddenly decides they hate us the second we open our mouths to speak and are generally welcomed with open arms and warm smiles.

We take some gravy and chop-up some leftover meat off-cuts, mash it together and then we put it in some pastry and cover it in tomato sauce and universally think it's acceptable as a balanced meal (when washed down of course with anything with an alcohol content in excess of 4%).

We're also a nation of people that truly understand what it means to laugh at ourselves and at life and how important it is to dig in and work together when times are tough.

We're accepting of the local nasties - crocodiles, snakes, spiders, sharks in fact about the only nasties we don't have time for house themselves in the capital - Canberra.

We have a larrikan outlook, refer to each other in derogatory terms such as 'you old bastard' and colloquially we speak in tongues which leave most visitors scratching there heads.

But what in you opinion makes you proud to be an Aussie?

What separates us from the rest of the world - other than a gaping couple of oceans and $1000 in airfares?

Why hasn't Vegemite found legs in the US?

How come Violet Crumble and Chiko Rolls never quite cut it in the UK?

Why is it great to be an Aussie?
