The Best Aussie Movie Ever?

January 13th 2009 21:46
Exactly which is the best Australian film ever made?

With the release of 'Australia' - it was interesting to join in discussion with a few friends the other day to recount a few Aussie classics.

The following list seemed to surface - so I would be interested to hear your opinions.

What about Romper Stomper? and that one with Colin Friels...You know it, Im sure, cant think of its name, the whole town thinks he's taken his family hostage or something? Thats a classic, should definitely bump 'kenny' off the list. Also I havnt seen 'Noise' but I heard it was brilliant.

I agree with Cibby, Boxing Day is brilliant.

I haven't seen Boxing Day yet but I agree with Kleo that Romper Stomper absolutely should be on the list. I also thought Candy was brilliant. Head On was good and I would rate Lantana and Jindabyne right at the top of my list too.

I am going to go with Lantana, Dead Calm , 2 Hands, Mad Max, The Man from Snowy River, Happy Feet. I wrote an article nearly a year ago of my faves. Check it out HERE. There is one error in it though. I did say my all time fave Australian film was Baz's Romeo and Juliet - it was pointed out that while Baz is an Ozzie this, in sad fact, is a US film. Damn you Americans!!! LOL. It was also debated whether Happy Feet was an Oz film and I won that one! Out of your supplied list I would say Mad Max is the most iconic.

Romper Stomper did come up in conversation - but didn't quite make the cut. Kinda fell by the wayside along with Chips Raffety's early Australiana and one of Colin Friels earlier efforts - Coolangatta Gold - ouch

Stay well

Cibbuano

As Andrew O'Keefe would say of Boxing Day "it's on the list".

Just gotta find time to get out and see it now.

Thanks buddy

With such high applause - from such esteemed critics - best I bump this one up the line before I get landlocked in the work-day world again shortly.

Hey Cheryl J

Lantana and Jindabyne also got a look in - but thought it prudent to cull to a shortlist and let everyone make comment or throw in their own suggestions.

Fitting the bill as far as some of the 'others' we considered was Puberty Blues, The Club, Young Einstein and The Man From Snowy River - to name a few.

Cheers

Always a pleasure to have you jump on board.

Wolf Creek got a thumbs up from one mate - but then again so Windrider and Strictly Ballroom along with Spotswood - so I entirely agree - it's a pretty tough decision - huh?

On ya . . .

From your list I would rate the following as the best Ausse Movies but not in any particular order:

The Castle
Gallipoli
Two Hands
Crocodile Dundee

That is not to say there are far more Aussie gems than are on this list. But I will go with these.

I'm also a big fan of Wolf Creek and Mad Max, taking into account the low budget and the subsequently extraordinary rich atmosphere and visceral cinematic impact of both.

And I love the mood and vaguely supernatural atmosphere of Picnic at Hanging Rock too.

The Magician is a little seen gem.

However most recently Nash Edgerton's The Square pushed all the right noir buttons for me.

From the list above, I liked The Castle and Kenny the most, but the top Aussie film for me is Lantana. Brilliant.
Have a good one, MNG .

Oh, Jason, you have SHAMED me...

How could I have forgotten SNOWY RIVER!! I must have seen it 100 times at least! And Phar lap....I know I watched that over and over! DAMN!!

I actually think the second snowy River was better. So many great scenes in it - like when he gets the saddle on the wild stallion, then the bugger takes off, but finds him sleeping by the campfire later..."Dude, you put this gear on me, and I cant get it off.." That is so horse. And Jim says, "alright buddy, lets go get your girls back" and YEEHAAAA! They charge off, man and horse with the same purpose. Utterly awesome. Then the stallion attacking the bad guy! I always thought, "whoa, what do I have to do to have a horse love me like that..." And now I do. My Zayfe would attack anyone on a flick of my hand.
