The Best Aussie Movie Ever?
January 13th 2009 21:46
Exactly which is the best Australian film ever made?
With the release of 'Australia' - it was interesting to join in discussion with a few friends the other day to recount a few Aussie classics.
The following list seemed to surface - so I would be interested to hear your opinions.

...also, I reviewed a DVD release of "Boxing Day" that I thought was one of the most exciting Australian movies that I've seen in recent years.

Romper Stomper did come up in conversation - but didn't quite make the cut. Kinda fell by the wayside along with Chips Raffety's early Australiana and one of Colin Friels earlier efforts - Coolangatta Gold - ouch
Stay well

As Andrew O'Keefe would say of Boxing Day "it's on the list".
Just gotta find time to get out and see it now.
Thanks buddy

With such high applause - from such esteemed critics - best I bump this one up the line before I get landlocked in the work-day world again shortly.

Lantana and Jindabyne also got a look in - but thought it prudent to cull to a shortlist and let everyone make comment or throw in their own suggestions.
Fitting the bill as far as some of the 'others' we considered was Puberty Blues, The Club, Young Einstein and The Man From Snowy River - to name a few.
Cheers

Always a pleasure to have you jump on board.
Wolf Creek got a thumbs up from one mate - but then again so Windrider and Strictly Ballroom along with Spotswood - so I entirely agree - it's a pretty tough decision - huh?
On ya . . .

That is not to say there are far more Aussie gems than are on this list. But I will go with these.

And I love the mood and vaguely supernatural atmosphere of Picnic at Hanging Rock too.
The Magician is a little seen gem.
However most recently Nash Edgerton's The Square pushed all the right noir buttons for me.

How could I have forgotten SNOWY RIVER!! I must have seen it 100 times at least! And Phar lap....I know I watched that over and over! DAMN!!
I actually think the second snowy River was better. So many great scenes in it - like when he gets the saddle on the wild stallion, then the bugger takes off, but finds him sleeping by the campfire later..."Dude, you put this gear on me, and I cant get it off.." That is so horse. And Jim says, "alright buddy, lets go get your girls back" and YEEHAAAA! They charge off, man and horse with the same purpose. Utterly awesome. Then the stallion attacking the bad guy! I always thought, "whoa, what do I have to do to have a horse love me like that..." And now I do. My Zayfe would attack anyone on a flick of my hand.
