Who Is Your Favourite Australian?

December 4th 2008 05:33
Skippy
Perhaps 'Skip' makes it onto your list?
Who is your favourite Australian?

Just this week – the ABC released its results – which quite frankly (in my opinon) bears no semblance to who the real world would have atop its list.

People were invited to vote on either a living or historical figure from any walk of life.

The top ten voted as the most popular Australians are:

1. Olivia Newton John
2. Peter Cundall
3. John Farnham
4. Bob Brown
5. John Howard
6. Fred Hollows
7. Gough Whitlam
8. Sir William Deane
9. Johnny Warren
10.Tim Costello

So – would any of the above crack your list?

maybe John Howard the actor? haha

i like Toni Collette, Guy Pearce, and Lisa McCune, but they probably arent at "legend" status quite yet . . .

im glad Bob Brown made the list!

a few more iconic Aussie would be people like Dick Smith, Bert Newton, Jimmy Barnes, or Lou Richards

oh and i have a soft spot for Daryl Somers

Was Rolf Harris from Oz? I can't believe nobody is saying the Bee Gees! I guess if I was going for the laugh I'd say the guy who invented Foster's Lager! I'm showing my age but I always liked John Newcombe! After him is Rick Springfield. Do you guys still claim him??? *L*

Perhaps they are talking about John Howard the actor?

. . . or perhaps he just got his family (and Alexander Downer) to vote on-line an awful lot

Stay well

Can you believe that none of your choices went anywhere near making the list?

No - me either!

Don't know what was going on for heavens sake - when a celebrity gardener is cited at no.2 - the world's surely gone mad!

Rolf definitely is home grown - though he did steal the whole Jake the Peg routine from a Canadian.

The Bee Gees - mind you - like Olivia and John Farnham were actually all born in the UK - and we claimed them from a very early age.

Newk and Springfield were indeed home grown - though we do distance ourselves from Rick

How Kylie didn't sneak into the list is a mystery. Guess that's ABC disciples for you!

Good on ya buddy.

Hi MNG,

Put me down for Errol Flynn....

If the list is only living Australians then AC/DC also warrant a mention...
Austen Tayshus
Ernie Dingo
Nat Young

Can you believe that ABC list?

How sooooo many iconic Aussies who just don't even get a look in!

John Howard? How does that work?

Nice selection - Skippy still doesn't get a guersey - I wait in hope though . . .

Olivia Newton John?????? What the f**k??????

I'd like to know who made up that list, cos they obviously pulled it out of their arse. There are no real sports stars on that list - and nobody worships their sports stars more than Australians.

Not that I even liked him, but where is Don Bradman????

None of the people on that list would have made mine!!

I have to admit that ONJ would have probably topped the list that's been offered up - afterall - Tim Costello, Bob Brown, John Howard, Peter Cundell - what is going on . . . .

Of course you're right - why even Gunsynd would knock any/all of these off my list - not to mention The Don, Jack Brabham, Keiran Perkins, Betty Cuthbert, Lionel Rose et al - yes we love our sporting heroes.

Says alot about ABC purists I'd suggest.

Peter Cundell - I'm still trying to get my head around that one . . .

I saw this great Aussie movie called "Boxing Day" which starred an unknown actor named Richard Green... on the DVD he did some spoken word poetry and I was moved...

Definitely Bob Brown. He is a hero of mine. Tim Costello is amazing because of the work he does and maybe Gough. You can tell I am left of centre with my politics! The rest leave me totally cold!

The best Australians are dead ones...

Before you get up me...

"Peter Brock" - What would Australia be without the face to V8 motor sport... and he is still King of the Mountain (Bathurst)- which has to be one of the most challenging racetracks of all time.

I lost a close friend of mine recently, and he had made his name in Australia (even tho he was originally a Kiwi - most people considered him Australian) on stage performing Phantom of the Opera more than 7000 times - none other than "Rob Guest."

"Burke & Wills" - because their story, adventure, journey and ultimate sacrifice is what ALL (when I think of) Australians are made of.

"Steve Irwin" - who put Australia on the Map (through his unbelievable and crazyinfectious personality), and played with the worlds deadliest creatures to be taken by one considered docile by most.

Don Bradman - the guy was a freak at Cricket - (a bit like Pele to football (or soccer) and he's in anyone's world's greatest 11 of all time.

I'd have to agree with Fred Hollows - for his pure humanitarianism (gee not a word used often in scrabble) and his incredible vision and for people without.

Errol Flynn - I mean the guy was incredible on film, did all his own stunts, and who's swordplay, debonair, and screen presence was sublime. I love ALL his films!

Banjo Patterson...(what a great name!)

Dr Victor Chang AC - though born in Shanghai was an incredible Heart / Cadiac Surgeon performing over 300 successful heart/lung transplants here in Australia - and anyone who SAVES 300 Australian lives has to be considered a hero.

And yes Skippy.

I'm a Kiwi, and that still brings a tear to my eye every time I hear the theme music...

Thanks for the post. You're not a bad lot even if you do talk funny.

I think if Orblers had been aware of the voting protocols (vote early and vote often) then I'm certain you would've been right up there.

Next time perhaps . . .

Or maybe we ask for a recount.

Stay well

That's what gets me.

I guess there's one or two that could perceivably make a top 20 - depending on the voting audience - but when you take a good hard look at the list - is it really representative of the general population - I feel reasonably safe is saying no.

Thanks for stopping by.

If the list is simply a vote on a favourite Aussie person, they don't necessrily have necessarily accomplishished anything great really. We just need to pick the ones we like the most for whatever reason.

That's explains a few of the entries. Olivia Newton-John is very popular whether you like her or not. But did anyone notice, ONJ is the only female on the list?

If it's a popularity thing I am surprised that neither Cate Blanchett or Chris Lilley made the list. They are both as popular as hell at the moment and would certainly make my list. Or even Kylie - not my fav but is very popular.

I dont mind Gough Whitlam, Sir William Deane or Fred Hollows being on it either.
