Do You Haggle?
December 10th 2007 22:01
It seems some people are good at the whole bargaining thing, and others aren't.
Whether you are or not depends on a raft of things – from your character type to what culture you're brought up in - but whatever the reason - some people seem to be born hagglers, while others just pay the asking price to avoid the hassle.
If you’re haggler – how successful are you?
Is everything fair game – or are some things (like doctors bills) sacrosanct?
Let’s face it – most of us feel obliged to haggle at some stage in our lives – mostly when it comes to buying a home, car etc – so is it any different when it comes to electronics, clothing, jewellery?
Perhaps the difference between full price and the saving isn’t that much in your own mind – so why bother?
Or is the thrill of the chase and the idea of going ‘one better’ than the salesperson what drives the experienced haggler?
With Christmas soon upon us – and the stores reliant on your hard earned cash being deposited into their bank account and not yours –
. . . .what says you?
Want a few ideas - why not check out the link below (ignore the gratuitous advertisement featured first up)

Thought you'd be a certainty as a haggler!
Good to know that you've at least got it in your bloodlines through your brother.
Is he available on a lease arrangement?
Cheers

I'm usually remiss in doing the whole haggling thing - unless I get a bee in my bonnet for some reason - then there's no stopping me.
In fact - I'm the first to admit I even get indignant about the whole episode if I feel the seller is not being either honest with me, is rude or just trying to rip me off.
Be upfront with me though - and I'm happy to meet somewhere in the middle - screw me and you start seeing the whole Jeckyl and Hyde facade come out.
Ouch - think I'm just started to get myself worked up . . .
Stay well

It's definitely an art form - particularly when you're travelling through Asia.
It's when you realise that sometimes you're haggling over a difference of less than a dollar sometimes - that you realise that it's all in the game.

After living in India for three years, I was back in Oz standing at the checkout and when the girl said the price, it took every fibre of my being not to say; "No that's too much, I'll give you half of that!" (and it went on like that for weeks...).
It's taken a few years to get back into the 'western' swing of things, but I love a good haggle and think that the Good Guys are awesome - you should see the bargains (and thrown in extra's) I've got from that place...

You're right about the Good Guys - we've done the same.
Thought it was a co-incidence that the store we frequented was franchised to an Indian national with several of his countrymen and women as staffers . . .
Maybe you frequent the same store?
Stay well

That is a great question. I'm rubbish at haggling and usually hide behind my husband, so I'm doing nothing for women's lib...ah well.

Yes, I'm sure he is, but you are going to have to negotiate a fee with him!

In bali they rate the bargainers by a system of coloured plastic bags, its been a while but from memory Black Stripes signifies to other stall holders you are a bad bargainer, I always come home proudly with a collection of Black Striped bags or something similar
