What's the best bargain you've ever found?
October 4th 2007 22:01
One man's trash is another man's treasure - or so the saying goes.
Whether its a penchant for music, fashion, antiques or just plain everyday stuff - there's always a bargin to be found somewhere - whether its at a garage sale, Op-Shop, market stall or heaven forbid - ebay.
While hardly an experienced hunter and bargain gatherer - there are people out there - like a friend of mine - who manages to snap up the most extraordinary items - from old tram route destination scrolls to iconic 20's and 30's fashion accessories and assorted memorabilia - for virtually a song.
Of course - other than my first car - a brown 1972 Datsun 180B - complete with mag wheels, radio cassette and a boot you could swim in when it rained - I guess the biggest bargain of recent times to find a home at the palatial MNG residence was a 1963 Seeberg Jukebox.
A fixer upper which cost a mere $120 - this timewarped jewel now resides in the official men's escape - the garage - to be enjoyed alongside its 1961 Coke Chest Fridge companion - another iconic (and bargain priced) orphan to have found a loving home.
So - beg, stolen or bartered for - what is the best bargain you've ever found?
Betcha bottom dollar it was a beauty.

A set of Tupperware favours...an egg-separator, an olive picker, a cake cutter/server and a mini sifter...all in blue - 'cos aesthetics can be lovely and pleasing to the eyes...particularly in the kitchen. All for .99 cents! I only really wanted the mini sifter...but what a bargain!
$5 pair of Gap jeans -- your daughters will LOVE shopping in the land of stars and stripes!
...and most recently, $15 Billabong and Roxy bikinis...just in time for my sojourn to the East coast
p/s...ooo, u have a jukebox! I've always wanted one... Space permitting we'll get one next time...

I can't remember any notable "finds." I am a bargain... sale shopper. I especially love tag sales and poking around antique shops (the quirky ones are my fav)
Great question.

Tupperware - God's gift to husbands - who never quite know what to do with those half eaten left-overs.
As for Gap, Roxy and Billabong gear - don't even go there . . .
Light a candle for me!

I collect 50s and 60s ballgowns (plus gorgeous gorgeous 70s Halston gowns) so am always hunting for vintage treasures but occasionally find modern day treasures as well, like...
A dress by an exclusive designer that retailed for about hmmm...A$pick a number between 2 and 3...thousand...for $15. This dress was barely worn, if at all and the op-shop ladies were quite happy for me to have it!
...plus am also into watches so was chuffed to find a vintage Cartier in an antique jewellry stall. I had it evaluated and verified. You would not believe what I paid for it and what it's actually worth... felt bad so went back to those markets a few times to look for the stallholder but he wasn't there...thought it was just meant to be.
My husband restores vintage Jaguars (to wind down!) and I help (to wind myself up!) so some amazing treasures to be found.
I didn't beg, barter or steal this...I suppose I saved it. A 60s British Airways cabin bag that was given to passengers...it's shaped like a bowling bag/tote and is simple and simply gorgeous. Was my Mum's. I love it and always get comments about it.
Well...that's it. For now.
I like your treasures MNG...

That is a bargain. 9yrs use - no doubt time soon to justify heading back to buy another.

You are quite the shopper aren't you?
Perhaps I should let my three daughters tag along with you on their relevant expeditions.
Then again - always suspected you were good value

Can I pal round with you?
Had chance to stumble on what appeared to be a nicely preserved Breitling Chronograph - a few years ago at flea market on the south coast - but being dubious of it's authenticity - passed up the chance.
If only I'd known the oracle then . . .
As for Mr DD - what a hobby - though I find it hard to believe you'd need any winding up.
You're a treasure.

Datsun 180B....what about the Sky Blue 2 door 120Y with vinyl rooftop? No I don't own one, that was one rite of passage I didn't go through.
I'm usually into books and CD's.
The Juke box sounds very cool. I've always wanted one. When I get the perfect house....
Love & stuff

The perfect house is always someone else's. As for the Datsun 180B - what a chick magnet! And yes - it actually had a vinyl roof to boot!

Just don't wear your T-Birds gear or wrestling garb when you go into battle at the sales - errrr - on second thoughts - that may actually clear the decks for ease of bargain hunting!
