Big Girls We Love

July 1st 2009 22:11
Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah
Call them 'curvy'. Call them Rubinesque. Call them BBW - but in a sea of skeletal socialites - these gals are the lifebuoys we hang on to in the hope that sensibility will once again reign among the masses.

Yes - big girls. Perhpas not the most politically correct of terms - but are thin girls offended when we label them in the same way?

From Queen Latifah to Ditto or even America's latest darling - Kelly Clarkson who was quoted as saying that people liked her because she was overweight.

The 'My Life Would Suck Without You' singer - who shot to fame after winning the first series of TV talent contest 'American Idol' - says she has never felt under pressure to be thin because fans have always supported her, regardless of her weight.

Kirsty Alley
Kirsty Alley
Oprah's been there.

Kirsty Alley too.

Mika penned a song about them.

Gwenneth Paltrow played the long suffering alter ego of one.

But who have been or are our favourite big girls?

Oh I love that Mika song!

No need to fantasize
Since I was in my braces
A watering hole
With the girls around
And curves in all the right places

Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful
Big girls you are beautiful

I like the trend of healthier looking women that's started. Thinking of Beyonce, Kim Kardashian...not BIG per se, but voluptuous and healthy!

Then there's the very pretty Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Camryn Manheim.... Women in the public eye used to have curves. Marilyn Monroe was a voluptuous size 12, which is now considered obese... and what about Mae West? That sassy little burlesque lovely was very curvy. People don't have realistic expectations anymore.

Great post!

i hate that Mika song, its so condescending

im a huge fan of Dawn French and Magda Szubanski

and not that i think they are over-weight, but for larger framed women i like Jennifer Coolidge and Kristen Johnson

Fat Actress is one of the most funny comedy series ive ever seen, i quote from it all the time, Kirstie Alley is amazing

oh and bizarre trivia, a friend once told me that (in the face) i look like a white version of Queen Latifah, similar features apparently

J.Lo has the ultimate curves

onya MNG....

Morgie, I think you're taking it the wrong way.

We sing 'big girls you are beautiful' all the time.....Me, Teshan, Talli and the girl cats.....We sing it and shake our curvy butts!

Kirsty Alley Rocks. I love that lady.

Rose McGowan.....Curves to die for.

Dont ever forget my dear Lucy Lawless, truly a Big girl.....

I believe strongly in fitness and health. When I got with my man, I was a size 16. After a few years I dropped down to size 8 as I became a fitness freak. Poor old Kman was contemplating suicide.

"Where are the boobs! The butt! The hips! This is not the package I paid for!"

After a few months of being thrown around like a rag doll by the horses I had to agree. Started building muscle...But my recent love of donuts has bumped me back into a 12......

What annoys me? Gossip mag does article on Beyonce. They say, "oh, we love her curves!" three weeks later, Beyonce has slimmed down. Gossip bitches say, "Oh, way to go girl, you rocking now you slender!"

WTF?

hi Kleo,

every time i hear it on the radio i cant believe he gets away with so openly mocking "big girls"

Walks in to the room
Feels like a big balloon
I said, 'Hey girls you are beautiful'
Diet coke and a pizza please

You take your girl
And multiply her by four
Now a whole lot of woman
Needs a whole lot more

a big balloon? multiply her by FOUR??? haha

how does he get away with it . . .

Ugh, I also hate this:

Headline: Tori Spelling drops her baby weight and looks beach ready with her hot new bod...

Followed by this picture:

Now, this woman is clearly malnourished...and this is what is considered a "hot bod"???

Hey Bookgirl

Beth Ditto only just popped up on my radar a few months back - and find her as much a curiousity as a talent.

Great to hear from you.

Thanks for the plaudit . . .

The bigger picture (so to speak) is being comfortable in your own skin. Talent comes from within of course - it's how those with it project it to the rest of us poor souls.

Stay well

Wow - take the Queen Latifah comment as a compliment - she carry's herself so well and has wonderful features.

. . . and yes Jo Lo does have the ultimate set of dangerous curves.

Nice tale. The underweight are so often overvalued in the tabloids aren't they!

Lucy Lawless is a great example which I hadn't thought of - and as for sporting heroines such as Serena Williams - well there's a girl who has to work hard at it too.

Probably the same way Racey got away with the song Skinny Girls way back in that late 70's - there's no accounting for it.

I'm going to try again to comment. This is my fourth attempt. Grr.

I have always envied women like Kim Kardashian, she has such a gorgeous womanly figure. I have always been petite and for most of my life downright skinny. There wasn't anything I could do about it, it's just my natural size and shape. I have filled out a bit in the last few years but many would still call me skinny. I'm 5'3 and 49 kilos so I'm pretty small. Until I was in my mid twenties I was only 40 kilos and ate like a horse.

What I wouldn't give to be curvy. Go big girls!

You look healthy though, Cheryl. Tori Spelling...not so much!

You are what you are . . . I just wish a few others - particularly those clowns in the fashion industry would keep that in mind.

Go you

Mr. Nice Guy, Queen Latifah is always my favorite celebrity. She's so confident about herself and didn't mind about her body size at all!

I loved this big lady very much...

Couldn't agree more. Style (as they say) never goes out of fashion.
