Movie Sequels - Which are the Best?
November 4th 2007 21:40
There's been plenty of them - and not all good - but when it comes to movie sequels - which have been the best?
The stinkers are almost too numerous: Grease II, Police Academy II, III, IV . . . . , Karate Kid II et al.
But there's also been some great sequels and for that matter trilogies - that do actually stand up and are counted.
A genuine argument can be raised for example over the Godfather and Godfather II, StarWars - the original trilogy, the Terminator series, Mad Max or Austin Powers - just to name a few.
So, not wishing to steal anyone's thunder - what sequels do you rate?

Just popped in and was going to say Batman Begins... then I realise Doh! it's sequels you idiot, not prequels... you'll have to forgive me, I've been up in the Monestary meditating with the Buddhists all weekend and then went on a 12 kilometer hike ... out of sync with the "real" world...*chuckle*
...um...
Karate Kid
Lord of The Rings
Indiana Jones
Batman
Time Cop
Pirates of the Carribean
Spy Kids
...there's more but I'll have to come back...
Hope your weekend was special too

Personally I think the Godfather II ranks right up there.
. . . and yes there are some titles and some actors for whom sequels and the expression - ooohhhh - just seem to go together.
Thanks for stopping by.

Just bought a new copy of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly last weekend - so would concur with the Few Dollars More.
Vid nights at your place and mine - seem to bear a remarkable sameness me thinks . . .
Cheers

Interesting selection - though in my books the whole Karate Kid thing slide from grace after its initial wax on, wax off lustre.
Pirates of the Carribean though - now that's entertainment on both counts.
Thanks for popping into the real world for a chat

Nah, just kidding.
Terminator 2 and Godfather II would have to be the two greatest sequels of all time. Two of the biggest examples of sequels completely blowing the public's (and critics') expectations out of the water.

yes, Godfather 1 & 2 were fab, 3 ok.
Terminator 1 & 2,
Harry Potter series,
and of course the RINGS!!
and I loved the spaghetti westerns too!
I even worked for Dino De Laurentis!! (he made the spaghetti westerns, among loads of other films of course!)
cheers

Would subscribe to most of your choices - though M-anythng left me a little cold all round.
Bride of Frankenstein? Now there's one from left field. I'm sure Bryn and John Doe would have some insights into that one.
Thanks Michaelie - gracious as always.

You know - when I wrote this - Indiana Jones didn't even enter my head - what a huge oversight. Though any movie that features a pit of snakes on the big screen would probably be enough to keep me up for the next few nights at least - oohhhh.
Thanks for stopping by.

Nice choices bud. It's seems fairly unamimous that the Godfather II would win the Oscar for Best Sequel Among Orblineans.
And you're right - T-2 was all action and pretty cool too.

Writing anon these days huh. You screen writers . . .
Spag westerns are outrageous. As John D mentions - A fist full of dollars has got to be one of my favourites.
. . . and Dino De Laurentis! Impressive.
. . . . I'm askin myself was that five or six shots?

Preferred Night of the Living Dead - but a worthy candidate none-the-less.

Thanks for joining the debate.
T2 was thoroughly enjoyable and I would certainly rate it.
I'll take your word on Romero's efforts but would wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Aliens.
Hope that you drop on by again soon.
Cheers

Our roads diverge here - as I'm not a huge fan of Nos. 1, 3 or 4.
Guess that's because I've got three daughters.
Probably explains also why we've got the Harry Potter collection neatly tucked away in the DVD cabinet.
