Books Which Made a Difference To You
August 4th 2010 00:10
From the time man probably first put pen to parchment, books have entertained, amused, enlightened and inspired us.
Most of us learn to read during our first years at school and continue to read throughout our lifetimes for a multitude of reasons.
From simply instruction and direction:
"Now, where are those spark plugs?" "How do I get to such and such?"or
"How many tablets should I take for this headache?"
To finding out about things:
"What's the capital of China?" "What will we call the baby?" "Where can I find out about William Wallace?"
Whether its for entertainment,to escape, to relax, to scare ourselves to make us laugh - books and literature in general offers a virtual out of body experience where when fully immersed we leave the present and enter another place and time.
Perhaps Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was one of the first books which made a difference to your life or maybe during your student days D H Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover proved insightful.
Did Oscar Wilde and The Importance of Being Earnest ever grace your bookshelves or one of the best sellers of the recent times, ‘The Lord of the Rings’.
Throw in To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, Kane and Abel, The Cat in The Hat, The Bible . . .
Is there a book which made a difference to you?
