Is this the Greatest TV Spin Off Ever?
January 8th 2012 07:34
There's been a huge number of TV 'spin offs' over the years.
From Angel (the spinoff from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) through to Frasier (the spinoff from Cheers) and a multitude in between - the TV spinoff is more often than not a one season wonder - normally residing as part of the summer television line up.
So when someone quizzed me the other day about what I regarded as the best TV spinoff ever - I had to think pretty hard.
Programs like Benson, Hawaiian Eye and Maude came to mind - even Star Trek The Next Generation (though not strictly a spinoff) even came into consideration - but then it struck me.
Love American Style!
Yes folks, I see you scratching your heads - but if I were to say to you the words Happy Days - then it may all start to mean something.
Originally a 'playlette' on the short lived comedy series back in 1972, Love American Style featured a 10 minute short featuring Anson Williams, Ron Howard and Marion Ross along with crew including Garry Marshall.
Of course the spinoffs from Happy Days such as Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, Joanie Loves Chachi are stories in themselves - but for the sake of history and edification of all - enjoy the clip!
