The 10 Best Video Games of All Time

October 22nd 2010 00:49
Video Games, Sega, Nintendo, Playstation, Games, Console, Hire, DVD, Computer, PC, Mac
Big call huh!

And right from the 'get-go' I'm here to tell you that I 'ain't no expert' when it comes to the intricacies of what makes one video game better than another but did spy a list of the top five games and added a few of my own.

So sans the classics (ie: Space Invaders, PacMan yaddah yaddah) here's a few to get the ball rolling - but would take advice on others for sure.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PlayStation)

2 Final Fantasy 7 (PlayStation)

3. Half Life (PC)

4. Tetris (Nintendo)
.
5. Goldeneye 007 (Nintendo 64)

6. DOOM (PC)

7. NBA Jam (Super Nintendo)

8. Guitar Hero (Playstation 2)

9. The Twilight Zone (Pinball)

10. Mortal Kombat (Sega CD)

Yeah, it’s a big call and its a quality list of classic games, but the bloody hard part of making such a list is the multitude of genres and games churned out since the SNES days.

And the term "best" is ambiguous. Doom wasn't the best FPS of all time due to the development of more sophisticated hardware and software. BioShock, Modern Warfare and Halo are technically superior in tone, gameplay and features.

But I do understand Doom as one of the most influential FPS titles of all time, as it popularised 3D gaming.

Then if we want to start talking about influential games, then there are some key games that needed to be mentioned. Like Resident Evil 4 popularising the new over-the-shoulder camera commonly used in other games now.

Modern Warfare 2 has popularised loadouts and singlehandly took the popularity crown for online FPS multiplayer off PC for consoles.

Halo introduced regenerative health, which is in every FPS and action titles these days.

Super Mario 64 is widely considered the base of all 3D platformers ever made.

Grand Theft Auto 3 created the sandbox genre.

If best means the hightest rank, then Zelda: Ocarina of Time should be on the list. Super Mario Galaxy and Grand Theft Auto 4 should be on the list. And Uncharted 2 had won over 100 awards.

Plus the nature of video games is relative to the times it was created. Like the cartoon Transformers between 1984 and 1993, it was great when I watched during my primary school days, but watching it now looks totally different to what I remember, and in a bad way.

I’m going to list the influential games that impacted me instead of making a list of games I think people would think are the best of all time.

In no particular order:

Deus Ex
BioShock
Metal Gear Solid
Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus
Grand Theft Auto 3
Resident Evil 4
Super Street Fighter 4
Persona 4
Mass Effect 1 & 2 (I would have said just Mass Effect 2, but it wouldn’t be part of the top 10 if I couldn’t transfer my save from the first game.)

I hope I didn't give you grief from this comment
