An Open Letter To Orble Writers
April 29th 2009 01:57
Public humiliation, character defamation, questionable personal agenda’s, individual white-anting and the verbal defecation of innocent blogs by the great ‘unwashed’ of the network, has left me to take a personal stance in the absence of any leadership or commitment from Orble’s proprietor and or his staff.
I suspect the Orble network is now monsterous enough that it motors along under its own steam – so my rant (let alone any thought of a departure) will prove of no consequence. That said, the consequences of defamation is something entirely different.
Right now – as many of you would be aware, there has been contrite and childish reverberations going on between a number of Orblers – who for want of their own inadequacies is simply bringing the entire site into disrepute.
A tirade of personal abuse, unwarranted and vulgar idiom and unjustified denigration of many previously unsullied blogs goes unheeded or challenged by Orble's so-called administrators - sites nurtured by genuine people who continue to show only tolerance, good will and friendship toward others in the Orble community.
Outside of the site leaving itself wide open for defamation and litigation claims by individuals due to its inaction of inflammatory and even sinister remarks and threats – it is fast finding its name being desecrated throughout the blogging world on sites now being frequented by the writers it once attracted – but has now lost.
As a result – my immediate mindset was to follow the lead taken by many other civil minded scribes and simply let my blog lapse – to take up residence elsewhere and try and rebuild a life in a more affable environment.
While that is still a scenario – I have made too many acquaintances, contacts, friends – call them what you will - both within the current on-line community and outside of its parameters to simply allow a lack of management and a few insolent malingering mongrels play havoc with what we had all ‘signed up for’ – an avenue to network, communicate our passions and express ourselves in a charitable environment where acceptance and patience also played host to educated and sensible debate.
I didn't (perhaps erroneously) realise these social graces had to be extended to include vulgarities and character assassination – which is now sprewing over to innocent sites.
As reluctant as I am to stymie free speech – there comes a point where those who have been generous enough to share their time reading my sometimes innocuous raves deserve the civil mindedness I believe they deserve.
From today, I will take a zero tolerance to anyone using any blog under my stewardship to make any personal attacks or engage vulgar or threatening language on those sites.
Where it is within my power - comments and or images will be removed immediately.
I would strongly advocate that as a group that we all take similar stands - not tomorrow – but today - to help rid the site of the scourge which Orble administrators are either too lazy or too gutless to do anything about.
I would suggest an appropriate response, disciplinary action plus apology on behalf of the Orble team to those affected would be a start from the site’s administrators – but don’t hold your breath – as I’m well aware that to date many of my former colleagues have awaited similar – and have either moved on to greener pastures or simply asphyxiated.
To the like-minded, civil and educated who have afforded the appropriate etiquette to not only my own insights and musings but to others – I thank you.
I hope you'll all excuse me if I don't necesarily respond directly this time and simply allow a reasonable forum and hopefully civil comment to ensue.

thats a good idea
theres one person i already delete, but i think i will make it a blanket rule
ive actually had quite a few people say to me they cant stand visiting Orble anymore because of the vulgar hostile comments of a particular user appearing on every post they click on . . . i have referred to this person as spam before, and they have been banned twice, but somehow they persist under different personas
zero tolerance seems like the only way to go

What is Normal Anyway?
You're echoing the thoughts of many people.
I'm only going to say one or ten things in response to this.
There is not a website in the world where this doesn't happen. Greener pastures? The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence?
Gary Larson in his Far Side cartoons had a great cartoon about this. Four cows at the boundaries of four paddocks, all eating green grass from the other paddock. With their heads stuck through the fences. They couldn't even see the green grass they were standing on. Hoof and all.
The net is full of this stuff. All the Darwinians will say it's survival of the fittest. All the Creationists will say life is all about suffering. Tough people don't move on. They chew the cud.
Let me ask you this. How green are the pastures beyond Orble? Have you had a decent look at the sites these people have moved onto?
I'm not a fan of Orble's inability to police their site, but I've looked at thousands of blogsites and none of them are set up like Orble's. So I ain't going anywhere to receive the same angst on shitty dating sites set up as blog sites. But your decision is your own, man. Do what you like. We won't cry if you leave. Please don't write ten goodbye posts though. They're really tragic. And the person usually returns a few days (minutes) laster.
I've always maintained that Orble is a cash-cow for On-Topic-Media. And Orble aren't putting their snouts anywhere else. The grass is very green here (According to Comsec).
What you have to realise is, nastiness breeds nastiness. You have to ask yourself one question. Who is nasty and who is responding to nastiness by pretending to be nasty? Once you answer that question, you'll be able to sift through the bullshit that comes from cows.

I'm glad you're doing something about it and taking a stand that you're not going to allow those type of comments on your blog. I do think it gets a bit much sometimes. And it is upsetting that people are considering leaving because of the kind of attacks that go on. I also think that a lot of people may be put off joining or visiting Orble because of it.
But at the same time, we're human. People disagree. And I know this isn't just about disagreeing. I have had very plesant disagreements with some people on Orble. It's more the personal attacks that go on. But wherever you go and whatever you write, in any situation where people can comment on what you say, there are going to be arguments - and people will get personal and attack others. I don't like it. I wish we all could be nice and lovely and respect everyone. But unfortunately, life just doesn't work like that most of the time.
I actually have a theory that one of the reasons why there seems to be such antagonism between different people on Orble, is because it does have a real community presence to it. On a blog, where you might get comments from all different people and hardly anyone interacts with other people, you probably wouldn't have that so much. People don't read enough of each other's comments in order for these kind of problems to come up.
It's kind of like the difference between a monthly lunch with a group of people and living with them. The monthly lunch may be a lot more pleasant, but that's because you're not spending too much time in their company. Move in together and it would be a different story. So maybe people could start to see the personal differences between people as a good thing. It shows that you have all gotten to know each other quite well.

I believe my last comment was something along the lines of "What a bunch of touchy, humorless bores we've all become. This isn't fun anymore."
I come back occasionally though--like now. I miss some of the people here.
I hope you will too, MNG.
Just to throw it in there--I support free speech, and that means taking the bad with the good. The thought of someone who probably has nothing in common with me censoring comments for their own version of rudeness gives me the willies.
Trolls are everywhere. Doesn't mean we have to acknowledge 'em. That's why there's a "delete comments" feature for the blog owner.
Me, I leave them on my posts. Makes a memorable and amusing record that can't be deleted by anyone but me.

Someone please explain this to me, as I cannot understand how with thousands of blog sits, orble only ever the same 20 or 30 top ten bloggers/writers/commenters?
But to answer the call of this post with my 2 cents worth, Ive grown up on orble the hard way. I don*t think I had put down more than three posts before I was being bullied by some minority faction, infact one of my first comments as the envirowarrior was *Are you for real?* Many since then have been hackneyed, or just plain accused me of being out of my gourd for asking question that went a little beyond the current *trend.*
No harm done, because I am no wall flower and I always assumed my blog as my property despite the gods rules and dealt with people as I found them. I have used my delete key more times than I care to admit. The point is, few know about it and it soon stopped the nonsense on my blogs, completely.
We get over the hurt of having been so badly misunderstood, or provoked for whatever reasons and in this way I think people have stronger convictions in virtual space than in real life, because of no real threat of physical harm, perhaps. Most are here to improve their writing skills, make friends, and have a chat in an otherwise lonely existence.
I have never had any qualms about deleting obnoxious commenters, and swearing ravers off any of my blogs even amongst those who had become virtual *friends* and I strongly advocate that each blog moderator should toughen up and become their own censor of what the direction they want their blog to go? For me personally, when I see others take reponsibility and do the same thing I have been doing for years .. taking control of their domains, it will be a re letter day.
Agreed. enough is enough and differences must be acknowledged. Each to their own, to talk about their subjects of interest until each individual is ready to step out of their comfort zones and explore other ideals without being rude, as I recently did with regard to Athiesm, something obviously beyond my perception. I didn*t need to abuse people to do that, simply to try and understand something I didn*t, because I wanted to learn more about the world I live in.
I vote on so many blogs without commenting that it is not funny, because whilst I don*t agree, or think something was poorly researched or badly written; or even not thought out, or just plain not my thing; I still appreciate that life is a learning curve and the writer was trying to express himself and his blog is probably about learnig to do that.
Writers understand this need and need no explanantion for it, other than the need to write.
I must say that AT LAST it is nice to see a comments section that is not copy/pasting past negative arguments into the current discussion. Anyone in any form of relationship (or who has been to relationship counselling) will know that dredging up the past is a no no. Doing so only causes more grief and so when i see this, I know that the person doing it is trying to make trouble, and not sincerely interested in resolving the issue, but in having the last word. Pure and simple and I would advocate that any blog moderator delete such mud raking, immediately, least they play devils advocate.
Zero Tolerance of this one transgression will put the message out loud and clear and then we can all get back to being creative, inspiring each other and having a laugh, or ignoring each other in the halls of orble as we used to when others spoke a language we did not understand, or like. You wouldn*t hang out iwth everyone in your neighbourhood, would you?
Debate what you will, and I have to ask what happened to the great Orble debate posts that the gods set up for this very purpose : BRING THEM BACK I SAY. Let there be one place a week to have this stuff out as passionate human beings. But on common ground.
BUT PLEASE, OH PLEASE no more, < my opinion is better than yours wars>. For sanities sake.
I guess it is time for us all to graduate from kindergarden MNG. Agreed.

The Unbearable Being of Meaness ehh? This post got me to thinking.
Many of us don’t blog because we need other’s validation. We don’t blog because we want others to tear us apart. Many of us don’t need the attention. We don’t blog because we think we are perfect or because we think we are always right.
We blog because we love to write. Blogging is tricky business. If we didn’t want to be read, we wouldn’t publish this on the Internet, right? But being read isn’t the only reason we do it. Many folks LOVE that people read our blogs (but I admit that I have been a slacker of late). I love that readers sometime see a little piece of themselves in the writing. I have blogs that I read in the morning as a break from my mundane existence. The peek into someone’s life makes me happy. I have made many friends through blogging and for that I am grateful.
But that is just a side effect of blogging, really. If you do love to write and you do open your blog up to comments, you’re bound to get unsavory remarks from time to time. You come to expect them. Negative comments on your blog can feel like some intruder has stormed into your home and taken a dump on your carpet. And I guess you could say that bloggers open the door. But there is a difference between constructive criticism and outright meanness Maybe, we need to shut the door from time to time.
I’d remind readers that many of us don’t really “know” one another. We haven’t had lunch and cocktails. We know only what bloggers let readers know about themselves. As bloggers we must care about ourselves and our readers. Desiring to do so doesn’t make us a weak people. So cheers friend! I heartily support your efforts and your decision to draw a line in the proverbial sand.
With admiration

Sorry to see you so upset.
Two thing you have to remember.
The fight and the venue owner.
I have been here on Orble 3 years and seen the comings and goings of almost every type of blogger from aggressive to passive. The NAZI's were probably the funniest.
People come for their own reasons and leave for their own reasons. They comment for their own reason and respond for their own reasons.
It is like a big pub where everyone gets free booze and just like a pub you get all the people who like free booze. On my blog I only have to turf out the occasional unruly drunk but other than that it is usually peaceful. You just need a strong hand and the job is done.
However the bottom line of why you are here is your choice. There is no one running this ship called orble and no one will respond if you are in trouble.
You can either weather the storms and wait for calmer waters or you can scuttle your own boat.
The choice in the end is always yours.

I should point out at this juncture that I have deleted already a number of inflamatory and sometimes incoherant/rambling posts.

I would also like to say how buoyed I am by your unified show of support and genuine feel for the tone of my concerns.
One mooted point - which had been raised inadvertantly is that perhaps IP addresses could be noted by the so-called Orble heirachy and bans placed on these addressees re-registering with the network.

I also want to say that it isn't true that the same type of thing happens every where you go, as some others have suggested.
Many other networks give more control to the writer to moderate their own site. There are lots of things I love about Orble, but there is a tremendous amount of room for improvement.
I've blogged (and still do) on many different networks. Orble seems to have descended into some kind of a pissing match, and it spills over to everyone else who is just trying to mind their own beeswax.
Again, props to you for speaking out on behalf of those of us too chicken to do so ourselves.

I don't consider myself a prude either but sometimes things said or posted on here are so vile I need to walk away from the computer to calm down.
The site seems to have divided into factions that despise each other. That is all well and good if you want it to be that way but please have enough common decency for the rest of us to keep it to your own blogs. Stop writing posts aimed at each other and fight it out in private.
I have lost a number of readers (from outside the network) who have emailed me to say they won't come back to Orble anymore because at any given time the home page is filled with vitriolic rants from one Orbler to another. To outside readers it is all just confusing. I'm so sad that readers are leaving because of this. I have also had the problem of my readers being deleted before I even get to see their comments. They are not spammers and I have no idea why their comments are being deleted or by whom (but that's for a different post).
I have turned the "Verify Comments' tool on all of my blogs now. Something I hoped never to do as it can once again turn away readers but I too am taking a zero tolerance stance.
MNG, I for one would be terribly upset to lose you from the network because it would mean we have lost yet another interesting blogger but I'm wavering myself.
It stinks that this was taken off the most popular list. This post at least shows that not everyone on this network is mean-spirited and nasty. There are many of us that aren't but it seems a great many that are.

I totally agree with the thrust of your argument. Some here say it is a type of censorship, I disagree.
I see your argument as demanding people use their brains and word a properly considered reply that addresses the issue, instead of attacking the personality and/or sexuality of the other person.
Regarding IP addresses, I asked if Orble could identify 'entities' by IP address, so as to reveal that it was the same abusive person masquerading as multiple people, but Orble said it was impossible, they could easily re-join anonymously.
I have been the victim of abuse on Orble, and sexual vilification, slyly half disguised as research and another time as 'humour'. Orble did not agree.
This site is run purely on an economic basis, and understandably so.
However, it is just a pity there are not more people involved, both as bloggers and in Admin, who are interested in supporting civilised debate, without resorting to low brow, trite, bigoted and offensive remarks, that bring any debate down to the lowest intellectual denominator.

However, it does all point to bringing back a special forum where all can have a whinge about Orble etc, maybe only viewable by members?
Also, to MNG, Morgan et al,
why doesn't Orble have a section on the home page celebrating whomever's birthday it is? Seems a bit churlish to leave it to the blogger themselves, and I know this can be automated, as greeting card sites do it.
AND... why weren't my ideas (and those of others here), on celebrating Orblers with the Golden Orble Awards taken up?
Jon and Charles liked it and said they were going to do it... frankly, I saw it as a way to cohere the disparate members and focus them on what was positive about their experience on Orble.

i always liked your idea of the Golden Orble Awards, it would be a great way to celebrate the constructive writers rather than always having the negativity highlighted
it would be nice if Orble spotlighted a few posts that arent necessarily popular but have showed particular creativity or researching skills . . . also a way to draw attention to new writers who are making an effort but have not been "discovered" by the regular users yet
i think the Writers Forum is the designated area for whinging, and it is only viewable by members
the birthday (and perhaps anniversary?) function would be a nice gesture on admins part
so far i think most of the site, esp the homepage, is all moderated manually and only on a reactive basis (ie: if someone complains or it is blatantly obvious)

yes, I agree, with spot lighting new Orblers, and those deserving of more attention. I think we all might have covered that in the Golden Orble Awards suggestion posts somehow, there were lots of good suggestions...
Maybe we should start it ourselves, but on a one IP address per vote basis...
But, I am unsure how that could be achieved..
And now that MNG has pointed out that the flame wars are still going on, and the sudden explosion of numerous identities, it would probably take re-organizing the way the site is set up... to stop malicious attack and skewing of votes... dunno...
I just read some more nasty stuff, and it is starting to make this site to an unpleasant experience... but where to go....where to go...

Seems that in my absensce the landscape of our Orble forums has been tainted somewhat. I don't think whats happening is anything new, just that the bickering is more present on neutral blogs.
Thankfully for the most part my own little slice of orble real estate is only flamed by passionate film debate and opinionated humour.

Better still, no vote system at all and rather than popular blogs being on the home page, have a system whereby each day random posts are highlighted giving everyone a fair shake. If people wish to help a blog become popular they can Stumble it, Digg it or whatever other mechanisms are out there that draw external readers. That is the only way I can see for this network to genuinely move forward and bring in more readers.

I write about topics that amuse, puzzle or fascinate me in some way, so that rules you completely out.
It has been your sly, furtive and craven anti-gay jibes, your unprovoked caustic rantings that, after I had been attacked by you, I responded, and with a good deal more civility than you have ever shown.
Frankly, I am tired of your puerile, asinine attempts at putting others down and your clumsy, artless, half-witted attempts to disguise the seething loathing you have of anything that challenges your blinkered social prejudices.
so hop on your bike and beat it!

On a post about rude behaviour on Orble...
What do you have to say about Fog's comment to Nevar?

I honestly don't see any point in 'slanging' matches on someone else's post. You're supposed to be there to read and discuss the item concerned, not go off on a rant/ return rant sequence.
I appreciated the article written by MNG, and I understand why it was penned.
Thank you MNG.
