Can You Become Obsessed With Your Blog?
July 29th 2009 22:21
Is it possible that there's a little obsessive compulsive behaviour in bloggers?
It occurred to me this morning that there are quite possibly a few of us - who for whatever reason - feel the need to constantly tap away at the keyboard for fear of losing a grip on . . . . whatever!
Be it ranking, adsense (ha!), social pecking order, personal pride or just notoriety - there's most definitely a feeling sometimes of being chained to your blog - be it here or elsewhere.
If we're all honest with ourselves - quantity rides roughshod of quality a lot of the time - but is it vanity of sorts that keeps us penning what is sometimes just dribble?
What is it that stops many of us from simply pulling back - taking a deep breath and saying - what the hell - I'll leave it for a week . . .
Try it sometime soon - betcha can't!

I know some bloggers with up to a dozen different titles all going at the same time - some with up to 2 postings a day. Where they find the time and material I'm not sure - but it's got to be exhausting.
I look forward to your endeavours . . .

adsense . . . yep
social pecking order . . . oh yes
personal pride . . . kinda
notoriety . . . yep
i have been accused of dribble, but i usually pick my topics quite carefully so there is a sense of continuity with each of my blogs
my favourite blogs i only post two a couple of times a week, others only once a fortnight or once a month
there is a sense of obligation to my readers and to the network, and i also do it to feel productive and contribute to the information cycle
ive taken weeks off before, but in general i like to keep a presence

I am about to go on leave but luckily my new phone has complete access so I am going to try and do a post from the top of Perisher in a blizzard. Let's see how that one goes
My blogs get angry with me if I don't post and wake me up at all sorts of hours. Total Randomness totally hates me right now because I have been giving the other children more attention.

I think I've created a fail safe for this.
All my blogs are set up so that over the next three days, it'll release posts, so that I can take breaks and not feel guilty. My goal is to have it so that I could take a week off at anytime, and I'd be ok.

At least I make some money with my blogs - they only make themselves hyped up and sometimes angry with their video gaming.
Of course, the few days the other week when I didn't have a monitor that worked properly was quite challenging.
Thank you to my baby brother for helping out with a much better monitor!

Half your luck - Perisher - sno boarding or skiing - or perhaps a littel Apres sport?

Tried that - and admittedly it took a little of the pressure off - but found I got a little lax afterwards . . . different strokes for different folks I guess.

So long as you didn't pause a movie mid-scene - couldn't do that to you . . .

You're right about the old PS2 - they're certainly addictive. Different kind of guilt associated with blogging me thinks though . . . it's a bit like not sending out Christmas cards one year - you get the guilts when they flow in and you're not reciprocating.
But that's a new post altogether I guess.

It's the first sign of things to come. First you crack the top 20 - then the Top 10 - then you start to see your earning more than 2c a day. You start making acquaintances/friends/colleag ues and then the pangs really start - fun ain't it!
Lovely of you to drop by - hope to see you again real soon.

I know how you feel. Had to drop of one completely recently and slow down a whole lot on another - I've still got the guilts about both.
And I wouldn't worry about the compulsive personality traits - we all have em - it's a matter of whether we can keep them in check that matters.
Stay well and thanks for dropping by

On that note I think it's really important to maintain a balance with your real life and your computer time, not only for your health, but also your blogs' content - if you're not out in the real world, observing and interacting, then you'll have nothing new or unique to write about.
Good post MNG.

But I was, and still could be, but other things take priority (online Scrabble, haha), work gets busy, Orble changes, and time just keeps ticking away!
Maybe I am obsessed with blogging, without actually blogging on a regular basis!
