The Great Board Game Debate
September 21st 2007 01:31
As a kid and when all other avenues were exhausted we generally occupied ourselves by pulling out either Scrabble or Monopoly.
Sure, we had a few other board games tucked away but other than something curiously labeled Capt Cook's Voyage to Discovery these two perennial favourites managed to keep the boredom factor down and our mothers nerves somewhat in tact.
Of course back in the dim dark ages prior to PS3s, Wii, ninetendo etc games such as Mousetrap, Ker-Plunk, Masterpiece and Cluedo (with Col. Mustard and Prof. Plum) kept kids (generally) off the street and out of strife temporarily at least.
So did or do you have a favourite board game?
Pictionary, Scattegories, Battleship anyone?

I think we even had Hungry Hippos.
I still love board games

There was a haunted house game with a metal ball that you dropped down the chimney into one of four "rooms"
Another was a haunted house fairground ride. It had a spider or ghost or something that swung down over the exit, I think you had to throw the right number on the dice to get out.
I can't remember the exact details or what these two were called, but they were fabulous games - would love to get hold of them again - but we're talking ancient history now. Cheers.

Yahtzee - great name - but never really caught on at our place. Disney Trivial Pursuit - what a great aunt you must be. Where were you when I really, really wanted Mousetrap and ended up with a dartboard instead?
Thanks for calling in.

Boggle - never played it - but sounds like a goodie.
Yep - Pick Up Sticks was kinda neat.
Hope you have a good one too.

I also loved Guess Who?, and the fishing game, and have always, and will always, love Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit.
Take after my mother with Trivial Pursuit though. Hate to lose but always do. She ripped our board in half once when she lost and had a giant spack attack over it. Lol.
Nice post, MNG.

Have to admit - have a love of trivial pursuit too. In fact this later proved the catalyst for what turned out to be one of the most interesting (and lucrative times) in MNG's life - but that's another post altogether.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing.

Other than that, I liked the classics - monopoly (i used to hide money under the board so that my opponents would think I was almost bankrupt, then I'd bring it out, much to their dismay!), scrabble, guess who, and cluedo.

Don't Wake Daddy? Now there's a new one on even me!
Boy - you certainly take the Emmy for Best Performance in citing a new board game

My family loved board games. We loved to play KerPlunk, Blue and Gray, Mystery Date (HA), Masterpiece, you name it...we played it! My friends love to play games so we have family game nights now!

Mystery Date - that's it! Never did quite find out what the game was all about - but it was enough to scare young boys into going and playing outside - no matter what the conditions.

yeah I never heard of Don't Wake Daddy, sounds rather cool! I did have Mousetrap...sorry mate...I'd have given it to you had we known each other!
It was fun, when you first started playing....the novelty value quickly wore off!
I know its not a board game, but, I used to love knuckles when a wee mite, played with plastic ones, but I remember some kids having real knuckles, maybe from piglets or something horrific.
Battleship was great,
Roulette was exciting, at 12 my buds and I felt extremely naughty playing it,
3D Scrabble, a bit of a pain though, you had to think too much!
Snakes and Ladders,
Chinese Checkers,
Mahjong,...ok so no board...
Ludo...
running out of steam here, because my household was more partial to cards and whatnot, but, of course chess, draughts, Scrabble and Monopoly were always there!
cheers
great post!

Battleship was right up there with Mousetrap and AFX or Scalextric slot cars on my Christmas wish list - hmmmm - scarred for life.
Yeah - knuckles were great. Onesy, twosy, threading the needle, through the arch - almost forgot about those.
Always a pleasure to have you drop by.

I hate Monopoly. No matter which way I played it, I always lost.

Could never get into Mastermind - probably says quite a bit about me really.
As for Monopoly - I loved it. Didn't have a lot to choose from mind you - and for some reason always to come out on the right side of the ledger.
I wonder if some academic has every done a study on the microcosm of boardgames vs your career and lifestyle?
Perhaps there's a grant in it for me
Thanks for dropping by

Love Trivial Pursuit my friend. Kinda had a hand in me appearing on that damned Channel 7 prog - The Rich List earlier in the year.
Stay well buddy.
Good to have you back.
