What Classifies You as a Bogan?

November 1st 2009 22:17
Bogan
Bogans - they walk among us . . .
What qualities exemplify a typical 'Bogan'?

Is it the traditionally flanellette shirt and mullet for men or 'tasteful' rose or dolphin tattoo on the ankle or small of your back for women?

How about the blue singlet for the guys and black leggings for women.

Or is it as simple as the unisex ugg boot and prevailing attitude?

I even heard of a 'Bogan' festival in 2010 - in of all places - Bogan Shire - man can't wait for that one.

Are bogans born or are they made?

No matter - they walk among us . . . so be scared . . .

its the willingness to start a bonfire in your backyard, paired with the tendency to yell out the car window or down the length of a street

its entirely behavioural and its learnt

I think one of the crucial qualifications is having more than four vehicles regularly surrounding a place of residence, at least fifty percent of which cannot actually be driven.

I would add to your well heeled insight by adding an obligatory lounge settee to the front verandah.

Apparently it's huge - and the sponsor support is amazing - keep you eyes peeled.

I'm sure it's not so much a single entity but a state of mind . . .

What quality exemplifies a typical bogan?

Schlepping in public.

Oh! Two more:
Using the word 'classy' with no hint of irony.
A bare midriff. In public. To show off the tatt.

Yeh. I really like to know what schlepping is too

As an intransitive verb, it can mean to move slowly or laboriously (eg I schlepped around with the twins in a stroller.) As a noun, it can mean a clumsy or stupid person. When I was younger, it was used thusly in a fierce whisper by my Mutti as we walked in public together: "Lift your feet and stop schlepping! You look like schleps!!" My sisters and I just assumed that meant that we ought not walk like bogans.

In winter, you can hear bogans schlepping through shopping centres in their uggs. In summer, they schlep in their thongs or crocs. It's not the footwear with which I have the issue. It's what they do with it...

Slopping around in other words! Not walking but shuffling sort of. So that's why my mother was always telling me to "walk and lift your feet"

Schlepping - you learn something new every day!

its Jewish/Yiddish slang, you may have heard it on The Nanny or Seinfeld, not all that common in Australia

Think I'll add it to the vocab . . . Thanks
