The 'West Coast' Sound
May 3rd 2011 00:20
While I might be 12,000 kilometres away - I've always been drawn to the west coast of the US - if not because of the similarity between the laid back nature of our lifestyles but because of the music which 'audiolised' the feel that so many of us long for.
From the Beach Boys, The Mamas and Papas, The Byrds through to The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers and Jackson Browne - there's been a multitude of musicians who have been labeled as having the "California Sound".
In reality of course California has a grand mythology and is so diverse and eclectic for one state - that there is no shortage of stories to be told.
Yet for all the wide variety of people, creeds, colors - when people talk about the California sound, they always talk about the pop music.
Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac even Neil Young and Warren Zevon all had it - and when you hear it - you know immediately the 'sound' to which I'm referring.
Regardless of whether someone who's written a love song or a road tune - you feel it.
I may be landlocked in an era which is fast becoming the day before yesterday - but I'm comfortable in that skin.
Perhaps the East Coast born and raised John Phillips knew a good thing when he found the land of the Endless Summer...
