Childhood keepsakes – what’s your fondest treasure?
August 28th 2007 04:44
Rummaging through a few long forgotten boxes in the roof of the garage the other day – I chanced upon a virtual time capsule of childhood memories.
From a well-preserved teddy bear given to me by my great grandmother to matchbox cars and some wonderful treasures – which modesty prevents me from disclosing.
Charged with a missive to clear the ‘rubbish’ – I decided to sort these juvenile riches into three neat piles comprising
1. Keepers
2. Yeah – perhaps
3. Toss
Nice idea in theory – but . . . .
So 2 hours (and a fair bit of reminiscing later) there I was – sitting cross-legged with three extremely ordered groups of childhood memories made up of
1. Yo’s yo’s, posters, cards, autographs, photo’s, books, toys, keepsakes et al
2. A flag
3. A postcard
Pathetic really – or is it?
Having virtually ignored the contents of the boxes for 20 years – I still couldn’t bear the thought of discarding these trinkets, these physical reminders of yore.
Sure to the guy rummaging through the curbside community clean-up they’re probably junk – but to me they’re gold – and certainly escalating in emotional value as the years continue to rush by.
No – I couldn’t do it.
So tail between my legs – I packed my Aladdin’s trove carefully back into its cardboard time capsule and sealed it up to allow the memories like great vintages to ferment and be savoured for another day.

This is another great question. My prized possession when I was an angel of a child was a rag doll that I took everywhere and ended up being called Tatty Head as that was the state she ended up being in. She was well-cherished and my security doll. I wasn't into teddies, just that one. Tatty Head will always be with me in spirit..

Tatty Head - now there's a name. You know as politically incorrect as it is these days - a good friend of mine had a 'black' rag doll - which to this day is a confidante.
Thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean about 'politically incorrect' names, it's almost bordering on ridiculous now. I read somewhere that they were considering Big Ears in the Noddy stories to be a dubious influence as he was 'clearly gay'. That's just adult projection onto children's books that children were unlikely to think of or see...and so what if he was gay? Big deal.....and then there's Sooty, also considered 'politically incorrect'...what a pity....
Byeee, I've really enjoyed this post,

You guys!
Steve Austin, Evil Kenevil - next you'll be telling me that you had A-team and Planet of the Apes action figures.
Love your work.
