Movies We Grew Up With

April 25th 2011 07:43
Mary Poppins, Movies, Star Wars, Hollywood, Famous, ET, Drew Barrymore
Every generation has movies they grew up with.

In the 40s it was the western melodrama, Casablanca and Citizen Kane.

In the 50s it was everything from Bridge on the River Kwai to A Streetcar Named Desire.

The 60s was just as burdened with choice - with cinema goers either charmed by Lawrence of Arabia, scared out of their wits by Psycho or totally perplexed by 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The 70s, 80s and 90s - well - pick a film (any film).

But some films, regardless of how good (or bad) they really were stick with us as adults, with the same fondess that toffee apples, spinning til your giddy or running down a hill so fast that your legs simply don't keep up and you 'come a croppa'

We know they're not always good for us - but they remain guilty reminders of when a movie was just a movie in a growing mind.

So whether it was ET or Star Wars, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes or Mary Poppins - did you have a movie you grew up with?

Hi MNG,

happy Easter old chasp!

Some of my childhood favourites;

My Fair Lady,
Mary Poppins,
Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines,
The Great Race,
The Sound of Music,
Goldfinger,
Thunderball,
Dr. No,
From Russia with Love,
You Only Live Twice,
The Apartment,
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World,
Spartacus,
Oceans Eleven,
Guys and Dolls,
Lawrence of Arabia,
2001,
Kind Hearts and Coronets,
The Lady Killers,
Saint Trinians,
etc etc etc....

I could go on...and on...

I will never forget the marvellously rich colour and the magic of Mary Poppins, nor seeing my first film in Sydney, a rare treat with just my dad, which was The Sound of Music.

Oh, I forgot, The Nutty Professor with my childhood fave performer Jerry Lewis...

Such simpler times, and the whole experience of entering those grand old theatre palaces, the confectionary counter, the boy with the shoulder strapped tray filled with choc tops, lolly bags, crisps and drinks, the old advertisment slides, the Shhh! slide, and then the cartoon, the playing of God Save the Queen and everyone stood at attention, the shorts, the cermony of the house curtains and the dimming of the house lights, then interval....

The fabulous foyers, with crystal chandeliers, huge marble staircases, rich carpeting and big fat down filled seats in the dress circle, or, if you wanted to be very grand, sitting in one of the box seats, or Royal box...

It is a world I want to see brought back...it captured the magic and the ceremony, it made the experience of seeing a film an event; the dress code during the day was neat and tidy, shirts with collars, and in the evening, full dinner wear, cocktail dresses, suits with ties, and tuxedos as the wealthy would wear, to go off to dinner afterwards, or a nightclub.

I miss that era so, so much...

cheers and thanks for prompting the memories!

Back at ya.

I remember the first movie I ever saw in Sydney being Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - and the excitement that went with travelling in on the bus and train to see it.

Of course you would get 'dressed' to go into town and as a little un' I recall my grandmother making me wear a little jacket and young man's trousers - even as a four year old - while she would wear a hat and gloves (as everyone did back in the day).

Yes - I suspect those days of yore are long past - but while ever we still have the memories - it will still rekindle only the fondest of thoughts.

so true MNG,

the kids of today don't have any idea of what they missed.

inventing your own games, for one, is something the young seems mentally incapable of doing, without their gameboy etc, they are lost.

If I win lotto, maybe we should start our own old world picture palace MNG, now get practising on the organ!

cheers
