Bend and Stretch, Reach for the Sky . . .
Romper, Stomper, Bomper, Boo, tell me, tell me, tell me do . . .
Mr Doo Bee, how do you do . . .
All familiar songs with kids anywhere from Australia, the US, Japan, Canada, the UK even New Zealand and Puerto Rico spanning from the mid 50s through to the early 90s.
Locally, so much which was taken for granted 'back in the day' such as saying grace before gulping down a 'Doo Bee' mug of milk would simply not make it past the political nay sayers who no doubt would have issues with everything from whether it full cream milk the kids were drinking to ensuring no specific reference or implications were made during grace to offend any race, religion or minority group.
But back when times were a little more innocent and the world wasn't so preoccupied with what might taint four year olds - it was ok to 'punch, punch, punch the ball - punching so much fun, use your palm, your hand your fist . . . ' while it was the right and proper thing to address the hostess of the program only as Miss!
Of course we shouldn't forget the importance of Mr. Do-Bee, an oversized bumblebee who came to teach the children how to be well-behaved and noted for always starting his sentence with "Do Bee", as in the imperative "Do be"; "Do Bee good boys and girls - while there was also a a "Mr. Don't Bee" to show children exactly what they should not do.
Jack in the Box (who occassionally jumped up) also made a daily appearance - not to mention featuring on the marching baton which graced not only the program but toy stores around the world.
And it would be remiss of me not to close without mention of 'the magic mirror' - which could see all - including you!
