Shows We Loved - The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis
December 3rd 2010 04:42
Well before he was shipwrecked with the Skipper, Mr and Mrs Howell, the Professor, Mary Ann and Ginger - Bob Denver (aka Gilligan) had a life as a beatnik - and sidekick to a guy named Dobie.
Starring Dwayne Hickman, Dobie Gillis was an average teen. He thought about money, cars and girls and like most teens wanted more of all three.
Dobie's best friend was Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver), who greatest claim to fame (other than playing his bongo drums) was shuttering at the word "work."
Dobie's father was a grocer, but Dobie always felt that the "rich guys" got the girls.
Zelda Gilroy (Sheila James Kuehl) saw Dobie as a future husband. But Zelda was of course none of the things Dobie wanted and more often than not proved to be simply a nagging hurdle in his road to love.
The could almost be said for the money-hungry blonde Thalia Menninger (Tuesday Weld), who frequently entangled Dobie in her money-making schemes. However Weld soon left the series but was replaced by a seemingly endless stream of young women equally hard for Dobie to obtain.
Those with a love of all things Dobie will recall that each episdoe began and ended with Dobie contemplating life under a statue of Rodin's "the Thinker", while for the trivia buffs out there it's worth noting that no less than a very young Warren Beatty had a key role in the series playing the part of Milton Armitage (1959-1960).
