70s Afternoon Classics
September 14th 2011 00:18
As a kid I guess I wasn't allowed to watch too much afternoon TV after school had finished for the day - but then again, provided it wasn't pouring rain, you probably didn't want to be kept couped up indoors unless you had to.
But, there were days when TV was the best option going - and you had everything from Hogan's Heroes through to Batman and all those crazy cartoons like Whacky Races, Magilla Gorilla and Batfink to while away an hour or two before homework.
Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse, McHales Navy, The Groovy Ghoulies, Scooby Doo even Looney Tunes all took their place as part of the afternoon line up, not to mention weekends when wet weekends without the prospect of sport meant a line up including Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy, Ma and Pa Kettle at The Races or Francis the Talking Mule goes to Westpoint.
Oh and did I neglect to mention Elvis, The Three Stooges or even the obligatory western?
Nup, 70s afternoons were a virtual pot pourie of G rated entertainment for kids - unlike today's offering which only last weekend I noticed included everything from re-runs of Sex in the City, 16 and Pregnant through to just any 'reality TV' show you could possibly think of.
Ahh - call me old fashioned - but there are days when the Stooges, Ma and Pa Kettle and a talking mule would suit me better.

I also filled up on westerns too.
Got very fed up with the Three Stooges, Hogan's Heroes, and MASH. My brother always got first choice at the TV (he was the only boy) and he always chose the 3 Stooges and Hogan's Heroes!!
