What's Your Favourite TV commercial?
November 3rd 2007 21:38
There are some televison ads that are just damned cool - make no bones about it!
Miss 13 came home from school on Friday singing the praises of a lesson both she and her classmates had where, grouped into teams of four, they had to mime their favourite TV commercial.
The premise of the exercise was multi-faceted - but the concept got me thinking about some of the great TV ads that wander in and out of our lives.
As a teen - I remember longing for the first of the new Coke ads, come early spring - clearly a signal to all that summer was on its way.
Or those incredibly (at the time) evokative Moove Milk ads - which had testostone filled lads skirming in their seats in the late 70's.
Perhaps you had a penchant for the "Buggar" Toyota ads, or Uncle Sam deodorant, did "Not Happy Jan" do it for you - or was there maybe a catchy jingle that got you going?
Would love to hear what got your commercial juices flowing?

I like a lot of the beer ads. Everyone went mad about the tongue one, but I thought it was funny.

Ok, so I buggered the lyrics up a bit..
Then there's....Oh Mister Sheen, Oh Mister Sheen..."
And Dollar Dan the decimal currency man..."The fourteenth of February 1966!" GOD I was glad to be rid of all those halfpennys and threepences, and gunineas! Too bloody hard to add up in school!
WOT else...ahh yes..Frank Thring's threatening message delivered from ahigh back chair.."Have you paid your television licence yet? Hmmmm?"
"MENTHOIDS...M..E...N...TH... OI...Deeee..S!!"
Ahhh the sixties....such a great time for TV advert jingles!!
And Mister Sheen has a current day lookalike...JOHN HOWARD!!! That does bring my excitement down a little for me, but, Mister Sheen was definitely cuter!!
cheers...and wot a larrfff guvner!!

Oh...and the XXXX beer commercial series, particularly the one when the old bloke adds one bottle of sherry to the huge load of XXXX beer in the back of his ute, and it collapses, and he blames the missus and her sherry drinking...well...you have to see it!

Oh, the AAMI insurance of the girl and her dad trying to save petrol is pretty funny (too)

Yeah - that tongue one didn't so much freak me out as much as I thought it was just gross. Didn't really make me want to go out and buy the stuff - which in the end is what the agency kinda gets paid for.
Clever concept - just didn't hit the mark for mine.
And I agree - dubbed ads are just plain cheap.

Had almost forgotten Frank Thring. What a wonderful voice!
The Mackenzie's Methoids ad was a classic too - in fact all the commercials you've cited are A1.
Then there were the 'for fast relief' BEX - Bex is Better ads, the Mentholatum DEEP HEAT . . . ads and Where Will You Hide Your Coolabar . . . ads.
The old (well not that old really) Holeproof - "Don't Get Caught With Your Pants Down" ads were iconic as well.
Thanks as always for your contri.
Cheers

I love the Mayfly ad. It's whimsical and uplifting. Have to say that the girl on the AAMI ads annoys me a little - but I did like the original - "too many rabbits in China" ad for Big Pond.
Always a pleasure.

My favorite commerical was a Volkswagen Cabriolet with Nick Cave's song Pink Moon.

I love nothing more than driving a car in the evening with the windows down. When I was a little girl I used to lay down in the back seat of my parent's car and watch the star. Everytime I hear this tune, I am transported back.
Great post!

I wasn't allowed to lay down in the back seat of the family sedan - but I used to follow intently the moon as we drove along.
Just clicked on the link - first time I've seen this - doubt the ad will make it's way down this way - so thanks - nice stuff!
