Classic TV Ads - commercialism at its best!

August 1st 2007 22:38
TV advertising may be the bane of small screen purveyors everywhere – but it certainly has thrown up some classic viewing over the years.

Remember the Uncle Sam deodorant ads – complete with some joker dressed in stars and stripes garb perched on top of a bi-plane or perhaps the Lemon Fab ad – with those thousands of lemons popping out the top of the detergent box and filling everything from a phone booth to a bus!

How about – the Palmolive “you’re soaking in it love” dishwashing liquid ads or the Berger Jet Dry paint commercials featuring John Mellion.

Perhaps the Brut deodorant or KO (the wet look is dead) hairspray for men ads took your fancy?

Maybe any of the great cigarette ads including a whistling Tony Barber and “Make Yours an Escort Today’, or perhaps Paul Hogan and those Winfield promos – or the oh so refined Stuart Wagstaff and “When Only The Best will Do – and isn’t that All The Time”.

Then there was that other evil of society – alcohol – with the Brandivino and Cinzano campaigns featuring ‘Newk’ or how about – Jack Thompson and his great one liner – “now we can all get some sleep” – as he thrust the virtues of Claytons on us.

Louie the Fly, Aeroplane Jelly, Vegemite, Milk Arrowroot Biscuits – they were all there!

Whether you were a schoolboy in the 70’s drooling over the Moove Milk girl or knew that it was time to start packing away the winter woolies when you spied the first of the new season’s Coke ads – there is certainly a feast of commercial classics which can lay claim to being entertainment in their own right.

So add your ad to the list.

. . . . and now a word from our sponsor!

I was one of those Aussie kids growing up in the late 60s to 70s. World Series Cricket..Ive managed to get hold of the Cmon Aussie Cmon jingle..
But my most memorable and favourite (read this as often recited) is John Mellion, "hurry up with the wood for the barby darl, those free-loaders will be walking all over this in 20 minutes!"
Theres ol John on his hands and knees, his long fringe falling into his face.. He was so Australian to me. My neighbourhood was filled with John Mellions.
Why cant we buy a dvd or something of old Aussie ads? Do one for each decade or something.
