Comic Book Characters - Who Would You Choose?
March 10th 2008 04:32
It may not be entirely fashionable these days - but once upon a time - kids did (yes did) read comic books.
In an era where Harry Potter rules virtually supreme in the hearts, minds and spending habits of children around the world - the sanctum of literary and artistic genius - the comic book - is almost a journal spurned - much to the angst of those who can remember.
Responsible for Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wolverine, Captain America, Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Charlie Brown, Ginger Meggs, The Phantom, Blondie and Dagwood . . . you could immerse yourself in your wildest super hero fantasy or contrieved situation comedy for an afternoon for 10c / 20c / 50 cents!
And when the adventure was over - and the world was once again a safe place for all - you could check out the ads for x-ray glasses, fake soap or sneezing powder - all spurious - but none-the-less entertainment in themselves as we devised ways to save our pocket money to send away for these must haves - without our parents ever finding out.
But I digress - and having rediscovered a handful of old comics in a box in the roof of my garage over the weekend - I ask you . . . who was your favourite character from the comic book era?

Never quite got into RIchie RIch - but Ghost Who Walks - Man Who Cannot Die - was homespun cool.
Always had a soft spot for Casper too - in fact we named a Samoyd we had after him.
Thanks for dropping by - always a pleasure.

Wonder Woman.
I still have this collection.
...but I also collected Archie (and all the ones of that series), The Phantom and as many DC titles as possible.
Predominantly...female superheroes but I love SuperMan, Batman, SpiderMan, Green Lantern and the Silver Surfer.
My children and my brother have the bulk of my collection but I still love them.
Lovely post MNG...hope you and yours are as well as can be...

I really loved Archie. Yeah, he was my comic book hero.

Probably goes without saying that I just knew you'd plump for Wonder Women (think we've been down that path . . .
Wasn't it great to see a resurgence in interest in the SIlver Surfer recently via the movie?
As for the Archies - how good were they - huh?
Jughead, Veronica et al . . . great memories.
Stay well - stay happy.

It's when you feel the need to do the vaccuuming in the whole Wonder Women garb that you have to start worrying . . .
Unless of course you happen to co-exist with someone who chooses to do the gardening in their Superman cape

As I mentioned briefly to Dusk - Archie was keen - Reggie used to give me the willies though.
Could never quite work out how Hotdog (their big shaggy mutt) managed to get his own cartoon series though.
Thanks for sharing.

...and what was the big deal about Veronica Lodge anyway??
Betty was the best!
Ohhhh...totally forgot about Mandrake the Magician!
And...how could I forget Modesty Blaise and Brenda Starr?...although these heroic and brilliant women were newspaper comic strip characters.
...and Asterix!! My favourite was Asterix and Cleopatra...these were all so brilliant!
Yeah...my children turned to me to ask about the Surfer's back history. I should be embarrassed but... I'm not.
...and what's wrong with vacuuming in WW garb???

My kids actually read Asterix on a Sunday - though cartoon strips are the poor relation to comic books.
As for doing the hoovering in WW garb . . .

The Phantom, Ghost who walks is easily my favourite. I also dug Lee Falk's Mandrake. I would also site The Shadow, Flash Gordon and Doctor Savage
In the Modern era Reverend Jesse Custer from The Preacher wins.

If push came to shove I'd have to say that I have an affinity for Spiderman, but my favourite was Luke Cage (blaxploitation comic's at their very best).

Heartily concur with your choices. Always thought there was something not quite right about having both a Joker and a Riddler in Batman though . . . . oh well.

You can't be all things to all people - and Modesty Blaise isn't really my cup of tea - but can see why both you and Dusk would plump for it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Good point.
Marvel had em all didn't they. From Blue Streak to Invisible Woman and Wolf-Man - quite a line up.
Personally I was a bit of a fence sitter when it came to allegiances.

So going from my experience of being an older reader and who my favourite character was I'd have to go for Gambit and Rogue, always loved those two. Also I had a big love for Spidey.
