Break-Up Songs

March 26th 2009 01:11
Ever had one of those sorryful moments in your life when the radio and your own self absorbed mind found solice in a particular tune?

Perhaps Kelly Clarkson and Since U Been Gone struck a chord or Gloria Gaynor's - I Will Survive - maybe even The Eagles - Heartache Tonight is a contender for pulling on the bleeding strings of your soul

The concept itself of listening to woe is me songs after a breakup doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when in essence we should be trying to cheer ourselves up yet, there’s little doubt that most people tend to spend days, weeks (even longer) after a breakup indulging their misery.

You do reach a point though and whether its Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus or Always On My Mind by Elvis - we've probably all been there done that!

While I'm on the point - it would be interesting to know if these songs vary depending on whether your a fella or a girl.

Does “Hurt” by the Nine Inch Nails mean the same as say Irreplaceable by Beyonce?

Would love to hear your tale of woe.

Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart

or pretty much anything by Dusty Springfield

theres a current australian artist called iOTA who has a couple of songs called Addicted and Dirty Little Secret which are angsty little break-up songs

Gloria Gaynors I Will Survive would have to go to the top of the list.

It is so old, yet it did a comeback several years ago and since has never gone out of style..

It says it all from a woman's point of view

Hey Morgan

I remember this song so vividly from Bonnie Tyler - I'd just started work and for some reason hit a real chord - was this one just after she'd done "It's A Heartache"?

Famed from probably having the raspiest (or sexiest voice - depending on how you wanted to look at it) at the time.

. . . and Dusty Sringfield - wow - what a blast from the past - I'm impressed with the scope of your musical taste.

Cheers

Hi Janet

What is it about that song?

How many women do I know that can relate to it . . . it's astonishing - boy I hope Gloria is still getting residual payments.

Stay well

The best way to dump a girl, is to tell her that you can not love her like a girl friend, because she is like a sister to you, that is according to some actual psychological research. At most the girl will be upset for a few day, but she won't do anything stupid as a result of it, e.g. seeking revenge or kill herself etc.

for me, it'd have to be Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"

i do go on a lot about Gladys Knight but I just love her. She had a song called "SO SAD THE SONG'" and it had a line in it....."so sad the song to see a lifetime of dreams scattered in the wind",
I love that line.
Oh and Morgan, great taste, Dusty was wonderful.

There's something so addictive, yet ultimately unhealthy about a song where the lyrics let you wallow in the unhappiness and regrets associated with a breakup. Come on, the other ultimate karaoke song (apart from I will survive) is Careless whisper....

What about Piece of my heart by Janis Joplin?? That song sends chills down my spine.

Oh, and by the way, i don't like that Beyonce song.

I would have to say Citizen Cope-sideways.

It would explain how I feel to a T.
