Greatest Dance Movies of All Time

Dirty Dancing
For want of something better to do the other day I sat down with Miss 12 year old and we watched the Jennifer Grey-Patrick Swayze 80's hit - Dirty Dancing.

It was an eye-opener to catch this gem after more than a dozen years - and despite initially wanting to put it into the decrepit genre - Miss 12 actually sat down and watched it again immedilately afterwards.

With a few possible exceptions I've never been a big fan of the dance-infatuated - but it did make me think about the number of films which have had those fleet of foot as their central theme.

From the classics such as Singing in The Rain through to Saturday Night Fever, Footloose and Flashdance to the current crop including Step Up - and dare I say it - The Full Monty - they no doubt ignite a certain foot tappin, heel stompin, giro-flexin passion in many - for the rest of us simply entertainment and perhaps a big dose of exuburance.

So what rates - and sadly - what doesn't in your books?

ah, one of my favourite subjects! i love dance movies. my favourite is 'west wide story' - amazing dancing. i'm a gene kelly fan so i love 'singing in the rain' and 'an american in paris'. i don't mind the more modern 'step up' - some great dancing in them too. i love 'strictly ballroom' - my favourite scene is when the oldies teach tara morice and paul mecurio the pase doble (sp?)

I take it you mean West Side Story - and not the version for hoizontally challenged dancers

BTW - how good was Gene Kelly - he even managed to look graceful on a pair of rollerskates in the very forgettable Xanadu.

Stay well and thanks for stopping by

i love Billy Elliot, and Shall We Dance is so cute (J.Lo)

i love the ridiculous group dance scenes in She's All That and Suddenly 30 where everybody just instantly knows the moves and dances perfectly . . . there was a great parody of the absurdity of such group dancing in Enchanted

all time fave dance scene is Heath Ledger in A Knights Tale, that is gorgeous

Didn't you just love the Thriller scene from Suddenly 30?

It's a hoot!

Now for your homework this weekend - you need to track down a copy of the Village People movie from around 1980 called Can't Stop the Music featuring Valerie Peririne, Bruce Jenner the Olympian, Steve Guttenberg and all the boys.

If you want musical and dance rolled into one decidedly sad adventure - then this is the one for you.

In fact - team it up with Xanadu and the Travolta gem "Stayin Alive" (not Saturday Night Fever) and you've got the trifecta of forgettable dance video's.

Mr. Nice Guy, did you know that Disco music is the combination of vintage and retro? Damn, no wonder I'm feeling so good, when I dancing with the Night Fever music! Lol

A bit of trivia----that's john Travolta's sister at the pizza joint.
