What Ever Happened to 'Please'
May 7th 2010 02:33
Remember (or perhaps you don't) when your parents would remind you to always say 'please' when asking for something - and 'thankyou' on receipt?
Perhaps it's just me (and age does that to us sometimes) but it seems this simple nicety is these days the exception rather than the rule.
In fact, I put my theory to the test only this morning only to be both horribily disappointed and smuggly justified in the same breath.
In total - I heard over a dozen requests with the following results.
6 - can you's
4 - would you's
2 - would you mind's and 1 please.
Ouch!
Sure - there were a few thankyou's or thank's which followed - but is 'please' going out of style? Isn't it just manners? Or am I going the same way as the dinosaur?

Incidentally, though, I've always considered 'thank you' to be far more important than 'please', as the first conveys genuine gratitude while the second is just a nicety to sugar-coat whatever request you're making. So I tend not to say 'please' but will always say thank you when the job is done...... that's just a personal anecdote though, so it doesn't carry much weight.

Some people just don't think it is part of the game but it is really noticeable if people don't say anything. Appalling really but what can you do?
