The 70s saw a dramatic change of pace for women as far as their roles on TV were concerned. No longer were they simply the doting housewife or minder of the inept husband.

No, change was afoot and as the social climate evolved, so did the diversity of roles.

In honour of this diversity, we salute five completely different characters and the actors who brought them to life.

1) Angie Dickinson as "Pepper" Anderson

This 1974 series ran for 4 years and starred Angie Dickinson as Sgt. Suzanne 'Pepper' Anderson.

The pilot episode for this series aired on the anthology series, Police Story in 1973 and starred the late Bert Convy in the roll taken over by Earl.

Pepper was an undercover police officer who worked for the LAPD. Pepper was always going under cover as a teacher, dancer, prostitute etc in order to get close to suspects and gain information.

This show opened doors for more dramas that featured women in lead roles such as The Bionic Woman and Charlie's Angels.

2) Lynda Carter Brings as Wonder Woman

Complete with Magic Lasso, Invisible Jet, Bullet Deflecting Bracelets, Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston, a psychologist who noticed that most of the crime fighting comic book heroes of the 1940's were men.

In 1975, ABC aired a Wonder Woman TV movie that was a ratings success. ABC executives were impressed with the show enough to order two more one hour special episodes and then finally 11 more to complete the first season.

The show would run for 2 seasons on CBS before being taken off the schedule in 1978 because CBS had decided to focus more of their attention on the sitcom aspect of their viewing lineup.

3) Susan Dey - Laurie Partridge

Susan Dey (born Susan Hallock Smith) is best known primarily for her role as elder daughter, Laurie Partridge, on the 1970s sitcom The Partridge Family (and much later as Grace Van Owen, a California assistant district attorney and judge on the dramatic series, L.A. Law)

A model before starring as Laurie Partridge in the television series The Partridge Family from 1970–1974, she was 17 years old when she won the part and had no previous acting experience.

4) Mary Tyler Moore

Fresh from her success as the wife of Dick Van Dyke in the show of the same name - Mary Tyler Moore earnt even greater acclaim through her own sitcom.

First aired in September of 1970 and breakthrough of sorts with women's liberation, The Mary Tyler Moore ran for seven years on CBS and was one of the most popular and acclaimed sitcoms of the seventies.

5) Pam Dawber - Mork and Mindy

Having started life doing modelling Pam Dawber's first lead acting role was in the musical comedy "Sweet Adeline" which led to her being auditioned for a major role on a new TV series called "Tabitha" (1977). To her disappointment, Pam didn't get the part, but she did get role in the movie A Wedding (1978) andshortly after, signed an exclusive contract with ABC who cast Pam as the female lead in "Mork & Mindy" (1978) alongside Robin Williams.
