Who Are The World's Coolest TV Mothers?
March 17th 2008 00:46
Whether they're lawyers, architects, witches or housewives - we've loved em'
TV mums (or mom's for our American cousins).
From Lucille Ball to Wilma Flintstone, Carol Brady to Marion Cunningham - we endured their hardaches, we easedropped on their families, we laughed, cried and befuddled our way through just about every situation known to mankind with them.
But befuddled our way we did.
Mostly the unsung heroines of television - but always a rock when it came to the crunch.
Generally the voice of reason, always entertaining and sometimes just downright good looks on legs - TV mums will live on in our hearts - but who were the best of the best.
Who were the cream of the crop?
Vote early and vote often - extra marks for comments of course.

Jill Taylor and Deb Barone top my list - but Mrs Huxtable . . . say no more!

After scratching my head for a bit, I've decided Sarah Connor's pretty cool (being so resourceful and strong). But she's a bit too serious for my liking - frowning all the time from impending doom and all.
So, the mother I find the coolest in TV land goes to an animated character by the name of Mom in Futurama. She is "dear old Mom" when she's in public and is delightfully ruthless and cruel when she's not. Marvellous.
Have a good one, MNG.
Rusty.

So much smoother than Lilly Munster don't you think?

You must be a new soul.
Thought one of the mums from Wysteria Lane or even Allison DuBois (played by Patricia Arquette) might have featured in your thinking.
I guess most of the great TV mums were from the 60s, 70s and 80s though.
Thanks for dropping by

The 'yo mama' out of Good Times was a great mix of hard-nosed and love in your heart too.

I have to say the coolest TV mum by far would be Endora, Samantha's mother on Bewitched.
I know she wasn't the mum on the show, but unlike the dutiful and infuriating Samantha who tried to inhibit Tabitha's powers, Endora allowed nature to take its course and encouraged her granddaughter to be the little witch that she was.
On your list Jill Taylor stands out, Claire Huxtable second.
And Debra Barone should be shot.

Screw Debra what about Marie from Everyone Loves Raymond! She cooks so much awesome food who wouldn't want to be her son and get stuffed on that Italian goodness!?
Another great TV mum is Kitty from That 70's Show. I love her laugh!

Hot. Smart. And loves the sass. Didn't mind a trip to the moon either.

My favourite TV mamas would have to be Alison DuBois from Medium, Laura Gibson from SeaChange, Morticia Addams from The Addams Family.

Peggy Bundy from 'Married with Children' most likely. She was definately the wittiest mother around, besides Rosanne anyway.

So who wants a big hug and an even bigger gift come Christmas then - huh?
Seriously - mum's are great and it's great to see you have a fabulous relationship with yours.

Wouldn't you just love to know if Jane Jetson's script (or Claire Huxtable for that matter) was written by a man or a woman?
Both decidedly cool characters though.
Thanks for weighing in on the discussion.
Keep smiling

Never subscribed to Endora - always came across as the medalling grandmother for mine - who undermined her daughter.
I guess that's something grandparents and grandchildren have in common - they both love to taunt us poor suckers in the middle.
Totally agree with your other three though - they are stand-outs for mine.

Kitty was OK - but for a real blast from the past - how about Julia from the early 1970's.
She was the single afro-American mum who worked as a nurse and single handedly brought up Corey Baker (what ever happened to him?) with a little assistance from Corey's best mate - Earl J. Wagadorne.
Thanks buddy - always a pleasure.

Thought Marge may have received a few more votes personally - but hey - that's what forums like these are all about - ain't it?
Kitty really is a heady mix of Marion Cunningham from Happy Days, Ethel from All In the Family and Peg Bundy - now there's a trio for you.
Cheers champion

Alison Dubois is both sexy (in a funny kinda way) and weird (in a way only a husband and her kids could understand).
She's definitely a favourite in our house.
Nice choices - as always.
Stay well.

Thought about included Rosanne and Peg Bundy in the list - but it starts to look something akin the the Academy Award nominees list - so had to cull a few of my favourites.
Great call on Rosanne.

Wondered if anyone would plump for Shirley Jones?
She was almost way too cool for her time. Mum cum rock star cum just about everything really.
Apparently she was the real life step mum to David Cassidy - believe it or not!

Endora was like "be true to yourself girl! This is what you are, don't ever be ashamed of it".
I know she wasn't painted in a good way on the show, but I'm sure that's because the show was created by men who wanted women to behave in a certain way and those that refused were meddling and unlikeable.
But seriously, what kind of idiot man wouldn't want his witch wife to use her powers?

My vote is for Joy Darville of My Name is Earl fame... Definitely not the best mom but her heart is on the right place. She is hands down my favorite. She totally cracks me up

Great to have you on board.
Marge is the consumate mum isn't she?
How anyone could put up with Homer - yet still see his good side is anyone's guess.
Wonder if it would work for me . . .

I'd also have to say that Buffy's mom in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was pretty cool. I mean she took the whole "my daughter is the vampire slayer, she's dating a vampire, and we live on top of the hellmouth" in her stride.

Ya gotta hand it to Buffy's mum - not everyone takes the whole vampire thing in her stride as well as she did.

It all depends on your definition of "cool" I guess...
Some modern ones first:
No ones mentioned Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise Parker) on Weeds? She is not just cool but smokin' hot too
Mrs Soprano (Edie Falco) on The Sopranos would also make my list, maybe not always cool, but certainly she loves her family in her own way.
Lucille Bluth (Julie Walters) on Arrested Development.
Honorary mention to Mrs Seinfeld and Mrs Kastanza.
The Classics:
So many greats already mentioned, Morticia Addams (Caroline Jones) is up there for me.
I've already spent to much time playing, so gotta go.
Fun Post as always!

Why I didn't even think of Lois, I can't even begin to understand. My kids and I used to sit and watch Malcolm in the Middle religiously every Monday night.
Great choices.
Hope you'll call by again real soon.
