What scared you as a child?

. . . and the winner for the scariest piece of cinematography in the mind of a three-year-old is . . .
While stylised - to a 3-year-old - it can present a fairly frightening image - at least in my mind at the time.
Every Sunday night on television - one of the commercial stations would run its Sunday night at the movies promo - with the image of the Oscar statuette projected on screen from a particularly distant point of view before being magnified to full screen - as if it was coming toward the viewer.
I would either hide my face or run from the room when it would appear on our screens (back then in black and white). It wasn't until years later when it came up in conversation that I explained to my parents the reason behind the terror.
For some it was the thought of darkness, some a fear of dogs - but whatever it was - it is an entirely rational response - in your own mind - even if the basis behind it has little of no rationality - such as a projected image on screen of an Oscar statuette . . .
Was there something that scared you as a child?
