Food For Thought - 5 Universal Dining Dilemma's
October 2nd 2007 23:38
Celebrating nothing in particular with friends at a local eatery last night - the topic of conversation turned to some of the many personal dilemma's associated with dining out.
While the circumstances vary widely from social situation to restaurant type - we concluded that there were five main areas of conjecture which seem to be universal.
How you'd act on these and where you stand would in dealing with these personal dining conundrums is (I would suggest) food for thought.
Happy to take advice on any/all.
1) Entree or dessert?
2) Garlic or Herb bread
3) Group bill splitting or not?
4) Tea or coffee
5) Tip or no tip
Flippant? Perhaps - but not a bad way to bring the matter to the table.

1) Both. ...but when in doubt or not that hungry... Dessert. Always. Diet be damned. The palate needs savoury then sweet.
2)Neither. Sourdough with a choice of butter and olive oil. Garlic overwhelms the tastebuds and herb bread overwhems the sense of smell.
3)Splitting hairs.
When in a group...equality rules but will say that this is unfair to those on a budget or who have not imbibed as much as the rest.
Alcohol is the bill killer and if someone is not drinking then I do think it's unfair to make them pay. However...what price good company?
In my case...there is a friend in our group that doesn't eat but has about 15 martini's @ usually $22 a pop! AND...does a Houdini come bill time. I refuse to pay equally when he's with us. I don't give a damn if he's a tortured artist. I adore him for his brilliant creativity but he is a leech.
4)My preference is an espresso then a macchiatto but the best thing would be to have a peppermint tea. Especially after dessert. But that's boring!
5)Am strongly opposed to tipping for the sake of it in Australia. I believe the service warrants a tip. I dislike the expectation so am very happy I am not a celebrity!

There. That's my no sense worth.
Hope you're well G...are you on holiday with the Mini NGs??

You're a diner after my own heart - though I am partial to a peppermint tea - regardless of how of its status.
And as a matter of fact - yep - taking a few days off.
Stay well my friend.

Love Speaks
2) Neither
3) Group bill splitting -- though sometimes a bit unfair especially like Dusk said when someone basically chugs a bottle of wine on his own! Or someone has one too many side dishes...but we think of the good company, and the fact we don't catch-up too often...thank God?!
4) Caffeine keeps me awake, so usually neither or perhaps a (boring?) Chamomile
5) Tip...happily if service is good, but reluctantly otherwise...!

Succinct answer.
Lara M:
Caffeine keeps me up all night too. Guess it's you and me against the world when it comes to the coffee v tea debate.
Oh for an Orblian dinner get together.
What a night!
Thanks for dropping by guys.

Thanks for dropping by.
Gotta get used to the whole tipping thang again early next year - when the MNG entourage delights in three weeks vacation in the stars and stripes.
Always a pleasure having you at my place.

Tipping be DAMNED if they are not polite and attentive...and the food good! I better not eat out if I ever go to the States...
I love garlic...and herbs...and bread...I have often asked, particularly in an Italian joint, that they combine them in the one!
Always coffee when out, more often tea at home...odd I know...rarely peppermint et al.
Ahhh dessert....love it...but depends how full I am after entree and mains, and how healthy my wallet is...which is usually suffering economic anemia!
I LOATHE sponges...like Dusky gurrl's pal...it scares me that I might even know him actually!!
I cannot imagine ever doing that to friends...if someone did that to me, it would be the last time they did...over $300 for martinis!!!!!!!!!!!!
I held, for quite some time, the record for drinking martinis at Kinsellas bar, at Taylors Square.
Amusingly it was 15 also; 15 large martinis, very dry, with two olives (for sustenance)...the record comes from being the following;
1: still standing steadily at the bar after #15,
2: still sound coherent and logical albeit slurred,
3: having bought them all myself, plus shouting others!
Those were the days...sigh...

It's clear now that you chose that moniker for more than one reason - can't imagine that you head would've been too clear after sessions like that!
Thanks for dropping by to the speakeasy.
