What's the Weirdest Thing You've Eaten?
November 10th 2007 20:18
Sounds gross - but a friend of mine recently returned from an extended furlough overseas with tales of exotic cuisine from some fairly exotic places.
Listed among his culinary delights were Haggis (sheep's intestines), mangrove worms and bulls testicles!
Regailing in all this whilst we enjoyed a Saturday evening barbecue - my appetite went somewhere south - and suddenly salad looked horribly attractive.
Sure, I've devoured lamb's tongues, kangaroo, bison, croc and buffalo - but generally speaking - I haven't really taken that next perilous step to finer (and possibly acquired) dining pleasure.
So - what's the weirdest thing you've ever intentionally or mistakenly eaten.

Urgh, how could those things be eaten? I would’ve been slithering towards the salad too after those tales.
I don’t really eat meat that much so I can’t add any unusual bodily parts to the list, but I didn’t enjoy inhaling a fly through my nose when I was a schoolkid waiting for the train.

Most people like to read when they wait for the train.
Lucky the experience wasn't one you enjoyed - could've lead to some fly-by-night addiction.

That's a bit corny (the fly-by-night addiction) but it did make me chuckle

I once ate Moose in Norway. It wasn't by accident, it was quite on purpose and although I was rather apprehensive, I was plesantly suprised! Very tender and very tasty!

Got to eat a few interesting things myself in Canada - but moose wasn't on the menu.
Closest I got to it was the chocolate variety.

I know you're doing up a little family dining itinery for the MNG entourage - but now I'm starting to get a little wary of your culinary choices.

Puts new meaning into the whole concept of mouth watering meals really.
Thanks for dropping by.

Balut (Duck Fetus) -- It's eaten a lot here, best sprinkled with rock salt. Some people eat the whole thing. I can't bring myself to eat the fetus though. Well, sometimes I close my eyes.
Isaw (Grilled Chicken Intestines). Sold a lot in street stalls. It's quite tasty.
Soup #5 (Soup with Bull's Balls). Eek. I tried this once and never ate it again.
I found all three really gross in the beginning. Upon tasting though, I liked balut and isaw. But Soup #5? Never again.

Flashes of memories
eeewwww I should have read this post after dinner! There are some rather interesting choices here... GAG!
I once ate baboon jerky. I was told it was just the normal jerky that we usually ate, but afterwards found out it was baboon. I`ve also had snails which taste like rubber in my books.... and Eland Steak... and Warthog.
Other than that I`m not really into culinary adventures.

I love trying weird food, but haven't had much apart from the 'usual' unusual stuff - kangaroo, chicken feet, snake, ox tongue, beef carpaccio, etc.

Never had snails (how sad is that) but my 15yo braved it a few months ago - as part of her French course at school - said they were great in butter and garlic.
