Xena Warrior Princess

Gay icon or not?
Lucy Lawless - best known for her role as Xena Warrior Princess has in the past fended off answering the question directly - saying that how fans perceive the program is entirely up to them.
A cop out perhaps - but when you're on a good thing . . .
Xena was of course a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.
Xena first appeared in 3 Hercules episodes during the shows first season but then joins Hercules to defeat Darphus, who had taken her army.
Producers, aware that the character of Xena had been very successful among the public, decided to create a spin-off series based around her adventures.
Aided by best friend Gabrielle, who later turns warrior herself, the Warrior Princess when not slaying was often campy and an occasionally emotional - hardly the stereotypical heroine.
Yet as the program doctrine cried ' In a time of ancient gods, warlords and kings...A land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power...the passion...the danger...Her courage will change the world.
Filmed on location in and around Auckland, whether it was Xena's courage or the deft writing on several levels of clever scripters - Xena did at least manage to change her world - not bad for a Kiwi girl who regarded herself much more highly as a singer in musical theatre than an actress.
