What's Your Goal?

August 23rd 2010 05:35
Motivate, career, money
Almost three years ago to the day, I wrote a short piece on my foray into the world of commercial radio here in Sydney.

It was a brief encounter with fame - hopefully not my last (heaven knows we all like a bit of focussed attention now and again) - but it did get the juices flowing.

From that moment I'd set my sights on being involved in some fashion with radio and offering up an escape through music for those of us burdened with either the humdrum of life, the drudgery of an office existence or simply looking for an oasis of the mind.

You can read that piece here

It was not long after my iniitla incursion into the studio that by fate or design I started to rub shoulders with people who knew people - and before you knew it - I had nuzzled my way into a tidy little Tuesday night gig on community radio.

OK, I hear you say - big deal . . . but you know what? After two years of holding down my program the audience share has gone from around 5,000 to almost 20,000.

Now the purpose of my tale is not to skite about this or anything else for that matter - I simply pop into the studio, produce my show, play the music I love and enjoy the interaction with the audience - it's what I do - it's a release and it hopefully affords the audience three hours of escapism as well.

No, my purpose is point to the goal I'd set. A goal that seemed a long way off - but in the end proved closer than I believed possible.

Sure, it's just a community station, though one of the bigger one's here in Sydney - but I've managed to learn how to operate a console (which looks remarkably like something out of a 747), produce my own program and hopefully keep a few listeners entertained with a mantra of playing the best of the best and the best of the rest when it comes to 60s, 70s and 80s pop and rock.

Right now I'm happy in my own skin bringing the tunes I enjoy to the masses - no matter how few or how many - and the fact people can also now listen on-line is a bonus - with many leaving some great comments about the show on the station's website - all of which are a little humbling.

Sound like unabashed self promotion? My apologies - but it was a goal - my goal and I'd love to hear about one you've achieved or plan to achieve.

Afterall - there's a lot of Orblers out there in all spheres of business, leisure and professional pursuits - who knows who's reading this?
