The Adsense Experiment

October 2nd 2008 23:50
Google
Does this make any sense/cents?
Perhaps I'm a little slow off the mark - but for those Orblers (in fact any bloggers out there) don't be cajouled into thinking that the more votes you get the more you're likely to make from Adsense.

Sure, you think to yourself - traffic up, page Impressions up, clicks up yet you're still earning less (if anything) even though your advertisers are the same.

So what's the story?

Make $$$$ with Google Adsense!

Earn up to $100 a week - yeah right!

Are they real?

Maybe some of you are earning more than a pittance.

I should add that like me - you probably don't blog for the money - and it's more about 'community' and there is little doubt that the adsense program is one of the most successful marketing programs ever created - but . . . and there's lots of but's

Of course webmasters are making money with Google Adsense - and that's fine - they're in the business of making making - just as most of us are - difference is most of aren't making enough to holiday in the Maldives and scamming the masses.

With that off my chest - I'm consoled by the thought that my Orble buddies are being ripped off just as much as anyone - and that in itself gives me pride in knowing that the people who continue to share their thoughts with me each day, each week, each month - are the 'real deal'.

And for that I thank you all.

I was thinking of adding AdSense to my page but now I wonder? I make pennies. So why all the hours of work? Masochist I guess!

I guess if we had the nouse - we'd kick off our own version - but it's a little like taking on the Roman Empire really . . . then again I suppose even the Roman's imploded as a result of too much greed.

Nope, can't quit the day job yet (or ever)
I wonder how many (if any) bloggers make *good* $?
Seems like it takes several hundreds of real clicks to bring in the $...

*S* I always got high marks when it came to playing with others.
I've found out that unless you get "clicks" with traffic, that added traffic will do nothing but pull your rank down. It was kind of pointless for me to add categories, a blogroll, and increase traffic when the biggies, readers and link readers, stayed the same.

I suppose the hidden truth behind making an income with Adsense is that it is easily as much work as a job in the real world.

I met up with one of Australia's prominent bloggers, he makes a decent income by blogging - but he works damn hard, and treats it like a science. He'll make small modifications, check his click rate, and make further modifications.

I think I will average $100 per year with Adsense....hopefully I hit that mark next month so I can buy something cool for the kids...

If not, I don't really care. I don't post enough on topics that people really like and would be directed to this blog for anyway.

I AM starting up a website that has reviews on affiliate products and hopefully if I ever put some effort into it, I could make both Adsense and commission money from it....

Who knows.

What is defined as good money?? Or even decent money??

I blog on Sport Talk, Gamer Herald and Computer Game and earn around $7 - $12 a week.

That can end up being $500 a year.

I'm a journalist full-time, and spend no more than an hour each day on all my blogs.

I reckon $500 a year is not a bad income from something I enjoy doing.

It pays the car registration!

If I spent as much time on my own blog as I do looking at everyone else's, perhaps I'd make more than peanuts. But as you say, that's not what keeps most of us here.

Mmm, I know what you mean, Mr NG. I think it's great you've written about it. I'm amazed at how little I earn even when in the top 20 at times.

I know that I could be more shrewd and work out what makes my stats better and things like that, but my mind doesn't work that way.

But it's a fantastic Orble world, full of amazing people, fanatastic writers, fascinating topics and it's good fun. I rarely say no to fun.

G'day OnlineWriter

It's a hard slog I grant you. And while I certainly think there is merit to what Cibby says - I would suggest alot of Orblers initially were enticed by the thought of earning 'up to $100 a week' - well most of us are certainly earning the 'up to' component.

Good luck with it.

Cheers and thanks for stopping by

There is no doubt that it does pay the rego - multiple your earnings by the hundreds of thousands who cut their cake with Google and you can understand why they are in a position to offer their latest folly of $10,000,000 or it's 10 to the 100th project - where you submit an idea to help the world (that's certianly admirable) - but in true Google form - what do you actually get for it - nought - just good karma brother.

Google get the plaudits - the publicity and decide on the projects which get the funding (see here there's bound to be a buck in it for them) and you get a pat on the back and a bit of feel good.

Works for me - how about you?

Let's see. What is my AdSense up to currently?

3 Years on Orble @ $80/mth for BigPond connection. That would make it about minus $2,880.

Oops, I forgot I'm on ADSL. And didn't count the monthly phone bill.

Let's round it off to minus $5000.

I'm doing alright, I reckon.

Google is a great search engine.

adsense is a joke!

the only benefit with blogging is getting feedback on your writing from other writers and keeping up to date on the news from reading the blogs of others

as much as i like Orble i think its pretty dishonest advertising it on Seek.com as a paying job with a weekly income . . . im sure if they were upfront and said it pays 20 cents a week they wouldnt have so many disgruntled people abandoning their blogs

now that ive had my little gripe im gunna go write some more posts! haha

blogging is like having an abusive husband that is impossible to leave

You're 100% right. They get you no matter what! And of course you know how closely connected the big carriers and Google are.

Surely, it's not as if they pay Google to ensure their product lines are advanced now . . . huh . . . surely . . .

I'm still waiting on that Orbler whose making $100 a week to drop us all a line.

As for advertising on seek.com - I agree wholeheartedly.

As I said before - don't be fooled - the only one's making real money are Google and the webmasters - after all they have how many thousand members working for them making $ for them each day.

. . . and while I can't really concur with the abusive husband scenario - I kinda know where you're coming from.

Stay well

Hi MNG and everyone

Hi Morgan: as much as i like Orble i think its pretty dishonest advertising it on Seek.com as a paying job with a weekly income . . . .

I was extremely disappointed to learn that I wasn't going to make the $40 a week as they advertised.

I soon learnt that I love the community and chose to stay. It is well-run, lots of fun with many interesting topics as well as the personal writing challenges, but I would've liked to have known the full truth in the beginning.

The fact that we're all still here after so long says something

To make decent money you need search engine traffic, which pays much more than Orble traffic (anything from 10x to 50x). Search engine readers are looking for specific information and so are more likely to click on an ad. The voting and Orble home page just make it more interesting.

To get search engine traffic you need to write about topics which people are going to search for. There is lots of good advice on Blog Adviser on how to go about this.

As a benchmark the average for Orble blog earns just over $5.00 per 1000 page views which is much more than the industry average which would be around $1.50. This is because Orble is set up to be search engine friendly and gets more SE traffic.

Quite a few Orble bloggers make more than $100 per week, it's not actually that hard if you are completely mercenary about it. As Cibby says, it's hard work. You can't just write about whatever you feel like and expect to do well revenue wise.

Having said all that it's great that people enjoy blogging on Orble depsite the bad pay Orble did start off as a place to make money blogging, however it's definitely evolved more and more into a place for interesting debate which is great.

Yeah, some of you guys crack me up.
You think that someone is going to pay you good money for your opinionated rants???

You have to research and include keywords and interest pieces that are relevant to web surfers.

I've owned a couple of serious websites and its hard work, you have to put the time in, I can tell you right now that Orble is a much easier and faster way.
The Vote count means absolute zero, because there arnt even many people on Orble. Most of my visitors and anyone making money is coming from Google or other links.

Also, there are about a thousand other affiliate advertisers and they all pay less than Google, they haven't cornered the market, there's hundreds of them!

However, I do agree with the advertising in Seek to be a bit of a low shot.

People constantly ask me why I spend sooo much time on something I don't get paid for, and I just tell them "Because I like doing it." Clearly it's not for the money! Like you guys, I enjoy talking to fellow Orblers and meeting fans of the same things I like. One thing's for sure, we may not be rich we Orblers, but at least we're dedicated!

Simple math would tell you it's idealistic to expect getting rich from google adsense. I did not add adsense when I started my blog here for the same reason. "Scam alert! Scam alert!" me thinks.

THEN, I started reading the blogs here and realised what a great community with ample materials for reading! Woohoo!!

And started blogging again after initially abandoning it for three weeks. I think most bloggers blog because they enjoy it more than they do counting adsense revenue.

Nice way of putting it!

You're spot on.

It's the reason too - that so many are 'weeded' out so quickly from the network.

It would be nice if those who have perpetrated (and continue to perpetrate the exaggeration) would come clean.

I suspect this isn't going to happen though.

I don't think journalists, myself included, are fooling anyone.
Studying your art for years and heavily researching your topics is what gets you paid for your opinion.
Not merely spurting your foremost thought onto the page.
