The 5 Greatest Sports Stars Ever

August 25th 2009 22:30
Muhammad Ali
Does Muhammad Ali make your Top 5?
On the back of an article I was reading yesterday on Mark Spitz - the concept of whittling down to just five - the greatest sports stars of all time was a challenge.

Dominance over the opposition, longevity in their chosen field, milestones and medals, the impact they made on social history all go to make up a champion.

But who would be on your chosen list?

To be frank - the choice for no.1 was almost a no brainer (in my books at least) - but numbers 2-5 were tough - given some are current champions (such as Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps) still have mountains to climb - how high is the question.

So whether Pistol Pete Sampras, Pele, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky or Roger Bannister are in your list - would love to hear from you.

Donald Bradman should be in everyone's list. By statistics alone he is actually the greatest athlete of all time. His batting average is about three standard deviations higher than any of his colleagues.

Hi MNG,

Great question here are mine:

1 Ali 3 times world heavyweight champ and more importantly prepared to give up his belt because he didn't agree with war in Vietnam.
2 George Foreman oldest ever world champ(beating time gives us all hope)
3 Jesse Owens for standing up to Hitler
4 Micheal Johnson for achieving times that were thought impossible
5 Isaya O'Leporu and five other Masai villagers( Who ran the London marathon and raised 100,000 pound to bring clear water to their rural village, a village no other villager had left before)

All Champions seem to have ideals, which teach the rest of us.

Personal favourites obviously - sad news is that none of those actually made the top 100.

Hope life is treating you well in the home of the brave, land of the free . . .

Let you in on a secret - The Don finished no.2 on the list of 100 - just in front of Tiger Woods, Maradonna and one other legend.

Three of your choices cracked the top 20. Foreman certainly is a legend for his achievements and should have at least made the top 100 list while Isaya O'Leporu should have earned a spot for humanitarian work at least.

Great choices!

This is a difficult question as I'm not really a sports historian, just an avid watcher of a few special teams. So I'll just name my five favorite athletes as of recent years.

Daunte Culpepper was my homie when he was the QB for the MN Vikings. That man broke my heart but I still have to give him some love for getting the Vikings to the playoffs several times and his work with Randy Moss as a receiver was truly amazing to watch before his struggles began.

Sammy Sosa pre cork bat fiasco. I've had the privilege of seeing him play at Chicago's Wrigley Field and it was really something to be right there when he SLAMMED one out of the park.

Kerry Wood when he pitched for the Cubs and before he injured himself. He was a phenom. He once threw a one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout shutout against the Astros. Beautiful.

People can scoff at me all they want, but Kobe Bryant is brilliant to watch. I never miss a Lakers game. He's INSANELY talented.

Slot number 5 is a tie between Alonzo Mourning and Julius Peppers. Mourning is a champ and it was particularly inspiring to watch him get his ring with the Miami Heat after undergoing and bouncing back from his kidney transplant. Peppers is one of the best defensive ends in the game. I'm so glad he's sticking with the Panthers for the 2009 season. He's thrilling to watch.

So likely none of my peeps are on the big 100 list, but they're the ones that have kept me watching.

Hate the break the news to you - but at least you're right about none of above cracking the top 100 - but whatever keeps your focus on the game I say is alright by me.
