Things they DIDN'T teach me at school
January 20th 2010 06:35
Ever heard the saying - life's hardest lessons are learnt outside of school?
Sure - we pick up alot of the basics from putting our collective noses to the grindstone in the classroom - but some of life's best learnt wisdoms come from living.
With that in mind, here are five non-academic lessons to kick off the debate that I think every person should know before they leave the nest and enter the real world.
* Evaluating Relationships: Given the tremendous importance of relationships, it’s surprising we receive so little instruction on how to evaluate, prune, and nurture them.
* Giving: As a child, I always thought the expression “it’s better to give than to receive” was silly. As an adult, I recognize the expression’s value.
* The Material Myth: Pursuing happiness by acquiring material things (plasma televisions, designer clothing) is like jogging to the grocery store on your treadmill: it’s not going to happen.
* Practicality: While you’re chasing self-actualization, paying bills remains important.
* Personal Accountability: Most success boils down to perseverance, determination, tenacity, and other products of personal accountability - much of which appears to be diminishing these days.
There's a myriad of others - but would like to have others add to this list.
Folks - you've been there - share the knowledge.

Maybe I am just old fashioned but hey, I don't think these things ever should go out of fashion.
