Hit and Miss - One Hit Wonders
June 20th 2007 07:37
Can anyone tell me what’s sooooooo bad about being a ‘One Hit Wonder’?
To the musical puritans – I’d suggest they’re considered little more than a summer storm – erupting with all the brilliance of a pyrotechnics display – then gone – never to be seen or heard of again.
The Knack and My Sharona, Edison Lighthouse and Love Grows, Paper Lace and The Night Chicago Died – all immortalized as anthems – yet ostracized by within the doctrine.
But you know – I’ve always enjoyed a storm. They’re exciting, unpredictable and colourful. They usually signal a refreshing change and no one is ever the same.
Sure – musical longevity has its place and there’s plenty of great artists from the ages who have transcended the decades – Elvis, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones – but lets celebrate those who (for a moment at least) have lifted our spirits by putting a spring to our step, a beat to our hearts and a smile to the faces of millions.
Lets face it – Patrick Hernandez is never going to have a Greatest Hits album nor will Sniff n the Tears or Randi Vanwarmer and as for Ami Stewart or Zaeger and Evans (remember their little ditty ‘In the Year 2525’) – the best they could collectively hope for would be residuals from either a compilation album or vainly pray a Hollywood movie mogul uses their material as part of a soundtrack.
Yes – it’s a sad day when we can’t uniformly applaud the efforts of these musical champions – after all – how many times does Armstrong need to walk on the moon or Hilary need to climb Everest?
