Easter Already?
January 7th 2008 21:35
There's no doubting it - retail commercialism knows no bounds. It is not only self sanctifying but feeds off its own predatory bile.
No sooner had we all exchanged well meaning saluatory greetings marking the start of another new year than I traipse into our local (what the heck - let's name it) Woolworth's supermarket - and before my very eyes I'm greeted with more Hot Cross/Easter buns than you can poke a stick at.
"Extra Soft Hot Cross Buns - baked 10am, January 5, 2008" - and a bargain too at $3.69.
But wait - being as it's so close to Easter, you can have your choice of either fruitless, chocolate or traditional varieties, in 12-pack mini's for the kids or generous 8-pack regular for those of us still getting over how much ham, turkey and Christmas pudding we'd vowed we'd go easy on this season.
Besides - when it comes to paying homage to the death and resurrection of Christ - Woolworth's just knows you wouldn't want to left wanting two and a half months out now, would you? What would the neighbours think!
Yep - you can never be too early with these things.
Thought you'd all be pleased.

Yep, MNG, the Easter debacle always bugs me too, nothing is special anymore, just BUY it all and stuff it in and on.
Children are taught no self restraint and so this silly world coasts along.
Too much, I just want two Easter buns for Good Friday breakfast, but to buy two often costs more than half a dozen, but I am in no mood for any of it in January.

Stupid commercialism!! Don't want to be reminded of the passing of time!

Yep me too - but common sense (and my waistline) tells me that it wouldn't hurt Woolies et al to give it a rest until a little closer to Easter huh?
Cheers (and don't go too hard too early on those buns).

Isn't the microwave a wonderful invention!
Lashings of butter helps too.
99c? Wow - perhaps I should shop over your way.

Hmm. That was supposed to be sarcastic, but my TRUE love of Red Tulip Elegant Rabbits took over the tone. I'm very sorry. I think I may be the driving force behind the early Easter surplus of supplies.

I'm already hanging out for the Darryl Lea Easter egg with the nougat type filling. You can only get this type of chocolate in the Easter egg (it must have the little chic on the top in the Box) or as a Christmas pudding chocolate. When I get to the shop they've always just sold out

So you're the one they talk about when they mention the whole "due to public demand" argument huh?

PS: Mrs Nice Guy's also an Elegant Rabbit fan - sometimes the similarities between you two scare me

How good are those nougat eggs!
Like most things - they've gradually become smaller and smaller over the years - but still a real treat.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing.

Surprised they didn't try to combine Valentines Day and Easter - just so it didn't look so damned obvious.
And to think there's just 49 more shopping weekends til Christmas
Cheers buddy

Not quite sure what you mean?
You hate/think Easter's stupid? Hate/think marketing's stupid?
I guess when it comes to eating - people have to be responsible for their own actions though.
Cheers
