Hollywood's Greatest Screen Kisses

March 22nd 2009 21:56
Kiss
The screen kiss is (next to gunfights, bar brawls and hostile enemy fire) Hollywood's most notable signature tune.

From Bogart and Becall in Casablanca to Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here To Eternity, the screen kiss affords an enduring legacy.

From the classics through to today including Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and their kiss in "Spider-Man" to Jack and Ennis' controversial hook-up after years apart in Brokeback Mountain - the screen smooch hall of fame has many contenders for the title of the ultimate celluloid pucker up.

So who cracks your 'ultimate' screen kiss list?

Certainly gave everyone an option in my pre-amble.

Personally I was gunning for the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp - dog on dog action.

Hmm...tough one. I really liked the kiss between Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites - the way he cradles the back of her neck first before bringing his hands up to muss up the back of her hair. It was so gentle but passionate...*sigh*

You are such the romantic . . . I'll need to go check this one out now.

I suspect I won't be disappointed.

Not sure what I'd nominate - but I'm thinking about the library scene in Atonement. But there is something in a lot of contemporary romance movies that really puts me off! So many tender romantic moments are ruined completely when the tongues start darting out. I feel like shouting (and sometimes do!) Stop it stop it stop it! I mean, that's sex not romance.

I concur.

A time a place for everything. Some directors just don't get it.

This post is right up my ally, Guy!

I have 2 favorite kissing scenes.

The first is from "P.S. I Love You" when Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank's characters kiss for the first time in Ireland. It is so sweet and romantic, I got butterflies!

The second is between Jude Law and Cameron Diaz in "The Holiday". She closes her eyes, and he kisses her eyelids before kissing her lips. SWOON!!

Hey Nat 2

Have to admit I'm more a traditionalist - but will admit today's smooches are not nearly as stereotypical as those from say the 40's and 50's.

In fact Mrs Nice Guy and I watched The Holiday again just a couple of days ago . . . so I know exactly where you're coming from.

Stay well

Though not exactly a kiss, I'm partial to the scene in Body Heat where William Hurt is outside and throws something to break the glass door that Kathleen Turner is behind. My totally non-sexual scene would have to be the sequence in "Lonesome Dove" where Gus has finally come to see Claire and she hears him outside talking to her daughters. I like her face and anticipation in that scene. I guess that wouldn't count because it was a mini-series.

Hi Morgan

You couldn't go too far wrong with a couple like Diaz and McGregor now could you?

Though I suspect there may have been a little sniggering going on between the two of them - both great practical jokers apparently who enjoy a laugh - and don't take life too seriously.

It's amazing isn't it - how certain scenes stay with us . . .

I guess life isn't always about the dramatic.

Cheers
