Which Movie Has Scared You?
January 29th 2009 07:16
When it comes to being scared - blood, gore and knife wielding maniacs aren't exactly edge of the seat stuff in my books.
Apparently it was for two friends at a cinema queue I found myself in the other day - as I inadvertantly caught snippets of their conversation regarding which movies scared them - well - witless.
Among the 'classics' they cited as the 'scariest' they'd ever seen came The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween.
The Evil Dead and Friday the 13th also seemed to get a mention - the rest I suspect were mooted in dispatches to each other as they proceeded to the stairs to enjoy an afternoon's viewing.
For mine - it's the When A Stranger Calls type movies - the stuff that could in effect actually transpire - how chilling was that voice - 'have you checked the children'.
Or your Rosemary's Baby genre - even something as seemingly harmless as The Sixth Sense (after Bruce Willis' fate had been revealed) was curious viewing and surely sent a small shiver up your spine.
So gang - The Exocist? Jaws? The Ring? Freaks? Silence of The Lambs?
Which movie has scared the proverbials out of you?

Showing my vintage here - but remember this as a kid when it was first released and the hysteria that went along with the whole Exorcist charade.
People supposedly were overwhelmed in cinemas, collapsing in aisles, being violently ill in foyers - it was grande marketing - and served to further the films' status.
That said - it is one of the great modern horror classics - according to this scribe - but what would I know?

Funny that you should mention Nicole Kidman. Her character in To Die For was probably the scariest women I've ever seen on screen!

You know - I've never seen The Blair Witch Project . . . not sure why - probably just never got round to it - always seemed to be on the B-side of whatever I happened to be doing at the time I suppose.
Perhaps I should take a peek?
As for Nicole . . .

What an interesting take on the question!
Have to agree with you on the whole Psycho genre though - as with Rosemary's Baby et al - the psychological stuff is seriously scary stuff.
I'll bring the popcorn . . .

You know I saw the Evil Dead for the first time at Frenches Forest Drive In with three mates - think it was on with something like Invasion of the Body Snatchers . . . or the somesuch those were the days!
We bow of course to your intimate (and knowledgeable) outlook on all matters pertaining to horror.

Bet you'd be great fun with watching these.
I suspect a cushion isn't far away from your chest when watching these either - amazing the security properties those pillows have

Another one is "It" the Stephen King based movie.... that clown when he is in the drain and the kid is looking for his balloon (or was it a ball?) - damn that bit even now scares the be-jebus out of me!!!

Thanks for stopping by.
Have to admit I don't know this one (Carnival of Souls) is it available through your local DVD rental store?
Certainly seem IT - and I concur.

What is it about clowns . . . so many people seem to have a phobia about them.
When I was a kid (around 3 or 4) I was absolutely petrified of stilt walkers - guess the same formula applies - clowns and stiltwalkers - not quite real huh?
Always a pleasure to have you stop on by.

If I watch the movies that scared me today, they seem pretty lame. A movie called Screaming Skull scared the bejeezes out of me. Now it's laughable! The Exorcist was the scariest of the scariest in my case. It desensitized me to all horror films. After The Exorcist, nothing in film can scare me.

I remember when I was about 8 and some horror flick was promoted on TV - way past my bedtime. Well my folks had friend round that particular night and the kids were allowed to stay up.
The promotion had previously warned viewers that just before any of the 'shock-horror' action - they would be warned - so you could have time to cover your eyes - or whatever.
The build-up proved so much more scary than the film itself.
The same can't be said about the Exocist - which in my own mind - took the whole horror thing to a new level.
Thanks for stopping by - hope to see you again real soon.

I remember a film called The Tingler that was promoted on a TV add as so terrifying you will feel it. At the movie theaters the seats were made to vibrate when the Tingler was about to appear, so you can only imagine the screaming.

Salem's Lot - my sister re-enacted the kid scratching on the window to let him in. Not funny.
