How Old Do You See Yourself?

September 23rd 2007 23:47
Am I the only one out there who has to remind themselves that they are actually (insert here age) - or is this a common trait among us all?

Not a day goes by - when at some time during the day I feel like a 16yo trapped in the body of a much more 'mature' person.

Peter Pan complex - perhaps, denial - perhaps or simply the conscious lobes refusing to conform - whatever it is - am I the only one out there?

Does this perception stem from the time in our lives when we felt most empowered? Most adventurous? Carefree? Attractive?

Sure we have do all grow up - but do we ever - really?

Does the boss still harbour a pimply faced 14 year-old's insecurities - but mask these whilst donning an 'adults facade'.

So how do you see yourself?

How old are you really?

Hi ya MrNG!
Well, an interesting propostion to put indeed!
When I first walked into the rooms of AA and NA, someone said, while sharing their story, that when you first get sober, you have the emotional age of the day you first started using alcohol and/or drugs regularly....everyone laughed...then silence quickly fell as a lot of new comers stopped to ponder upon what was just said...

Now that I have 'aged' some, 'matured' some, since 1993, I am now probably late teens emotionally, but, with many flashes of mature adult intertwined...not too bad for a 51 year old....hehe!!

But hey...who really wants to 'grow up'? Only the very young it would seem.

Being young at heart is the secret defense against aging!

cheers mate!

Tend to think the only that ages well is wine - and even then only a very few.

You always manage to put an interesting (and co-hesive) spin on topics.

Appreciate your insights.

Cheers to you too.

Hi Fog,

... this is an interesting topic for me, because all my life I have noticed 'role models' telling me how to act at a certain age ... and still I cannot comprehend them. *chuckle* I'm as old as the hills, as young as fourteen ... and as sweet, or sexy as I feel.

Comfort is everything, so I dress the way I feel comfortable, eating is also a matter of comfort for me - especially once you pass 40 - because your metabolism slows down and if you are not careful todays yum is tomorrows burgeoing hips...bla bla bla... you get my drift.

I get so sick of people saying you can't do that at this age, or that, at your age... bla bla bla...sure things change, but I can still sing along to a top 10 song with my teenagers, if I like the song, can't I?

According to some, you shouldn't.. well because, it's just plain... wierd?

God, I went back to University to see what it felt like to get a degree at 40!

I'm with you, if it still feels good? Then get on with it and enjoy your life, before your heart grows old... God forbid that I should live after my heart has grown old.

Thanks for the vent ..

You sum it all up very succinctly. Now if only my headspace and my heart can grapple with the confines my body offers these days - then I'm on my way . . .

Thanks for dropping by and venting.

Hi MNG

I remember someone very wise once telling me to never wish my life away. I appreciate the age that I am at the moment, I guess it depends how old I feel according to how I wake up in the morning,

Sometimes I can feel 27, other times I can feel 5 and on days like today? I can feel 80!

Most of the time I forget my age actually! The saying that you are as old as you feel is certainly true.

Trouble is - when I'm feeling 21 - I have to don the I'm dealing with 40 or 50 somethings in a business meeting.

It one of life's balancing acts isn't it?

Completely subscribe to your ideals though.

Not sure what 80 feels like - but I'm sure to a 90 year old - it's great

Thanks for stopping by

How old do I see myself?

Depends on the time of day...

Still have trouble believing I'm an almost 40yo...how? when??...

I am quite happy to be the age I am...looking forward to getting older...as long as I don't think old. (unfortunately biology shall weary them...I am starting to make those old people noises...)

What's thinking old?...I don't know...when fear of the new overtakes the curiousity?...something like that.

It's our generation...this demographic...we all feel like this. It's a good thing.
...it seems to have filtered down not so well though...the new crop of late teen and 20somethings are not 'ready' to be adults...that's because their parents refuse to 'stand down'.

It's not the Peter Pan complex...it's just the realisation that youth is wasted on the young.

Attitude is the best anti-ageing dream around.

Grow well MNG

Hi MNG...

Very interesting question. I don't compare myself with anyone else, though, so I've no idea what "old" or "young" is supposed to feel like. Jaded? Self-absorbed? Aching joints? Boundless energy?

I feel..wiser. And more secure. And hungry for more knowledge with every passing day.

Does that make me middle-aged?

Being comfortable in your own skin (no matter how smooth or un-ironed) is a great headspace to be in.

Sounds like your there.

Thanks for dropping by - you're always welcome.

I always feel young because I'm the youngest in my family (extended family included....except for the nieces and nephews obviously). But I do feel that I'm more mature than all of them

Love & stuff

Ya know - there are the discerning few who will tell you, that you can't beat a mature wine and a well aged cheddar.

Of course there are some of us who really appreciate having Fanta and cheese sticks some days.

Hope you find the right mix in life.

Keenly yours

This post reminds me of one of my favorite songs... Van Morrison's Sweet Thing..

We shall walk and talk
In gardens all misty and wet with rain
And I will never, never, never
Grow so old again.

In my twenties due to life circumstance I felt so old and tired. Now in my mid forties I feel great. I think we need to stop viewing old age as a problem -- as an incurable disease, if you will -- to be "solved" by spending billions of dollars on plastic surgery in an attempt to mask visible signs of aging, other billions on medical research to extend the life span itself, and billions more on nursing and retirement homes as a way to isolate those who fail at the quest to deny aging.

I embrace "conscious aging." I want to be aware of and accept what aging actually is -- a notice that life has not only a beginning and a middle but an end -- and to eliminate the denial that now prevents us from anticipating, fruitfully using, and even appreciating what are lost to euphemism as "the golden years."

That's deep.

Agree with every word too - though there are days when you feel (and want to act) like a teenager again - which is fine - so long as your kids don't catch you out.

Every day holds promise and every day has something new to offer each of us. Today (and every today which follows) are gold.

Enjoy.
