Ways To Encourage Comments on Your Blog

August 14th 2009 09:16
Most people who visit your blog won't necessarily subscribe - let along engage in active discourse if your blog simply talks at them.

Fellow bloggers and transient visitors (in the main) like to be involved in conversation, so get people involved in your blog. They want to feel that their thoughts matter just as much as yours do.

Ask a question at the end of your posts.

Ask if people feel the same way, have more suggestions in the area or what’s working for them.

Share and ask for help.

As a blogger, you should try to make it easy for readers to join the conversation.

Respond to comments and develop networks and friendships - and remember to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Don't respond to every random spammer or troll either - it's simply not worth the time or effort.

Write about something interesting and universal - it sounds obvious - but while it's great to have a small legion of committed readers - you need to sometimes diversify - if only occassionally to keep things fresh.

Make it clear that you pay attention to what people say on your blog and that you value their input.

And for what it's worth - keep it real. Serious bloggers can spot a fake a mile off. Keeping up a false persona will only hurt you in the long run.

Who knows - your readership may even turn into new friends.

Enjoy!

i think the most important thing you can do is not be an arsehole to people who leave you comments, keep it civil if you want them to return

i find people really appreciate it when you take the time to respond to them individually

Treat unto others . . . .

Couldn't agree more.

.... or just write about the most sensitive topics you can think of and try and provoke fights!

From a marketing perspective, it's a fairly easy way to encourage a lot of hits/comments. I liken them to the ads I see on TV for those stupid love calculators. Those ads obviously aren't focused on repeat business, the company isn't even mentioned. They just want as many hits/calls as possible, before interest dies and they move on to the next one.

It's not how I'd choose to do business, but obviously there's some money in it.

Good ideas, and I think many of us do this.

I think it also depends on the type of blogs and posts; whether you can actually comment on it -- maybe you really have *nothing* to say...or does it not matter?

Well said - I think you have summed it perfectly - it is only about 0.5% of people who will comment on blogs if not less than that. Most people that visit blogs are semi voyeurs and only want to read and see your opinion but not get involved - hence the purpose of the net, to do things without being physically social. Most of the commentors are fellow Orblers or bloggers.

One thing that really makes me not happy is people who spam their crap into their comments. If it's a similarly posted blog article then absolutley - a mutual article link to each other is not only smart but friendly to expand the article or debate.

Nice one MNG - what did you think of my comment?

MNG,

All very true. You know, while I wish more people were reading my blog for a number of reasons, I'm kind of glad I don't have the kind of popularity that means I regularly get spam comments.

MNG, a great post, and certainly something to think about for my next post.

I know it's important to post to a blog often, but what is not often enough. Or does it depend on a million things, and there's no hard and fast rule?

What do others think?
